The Murder Rate Per Capita in Chicago Is Higher Than the Civilian Death Rate Per Capita From the Ukraine-Russia War

When I posted a short Twitter thread revealing the numbers comparing civilian deaths during the Ukraine-Russia war to the murders in Chicago this year, I was shocked by the DMs I started getting instantly. Since I don’t block people and I have open DMs, I’m accustomed to heinous attacks. What made these attacks different was that they were attacking my math, which is correct.

They usually just call me fat, stupid, racist, a bad Christian, a “MAGAt,” or something else subjective. This time they started hitting me as a Russian apologist for reporting publicly available statistics.

Here are the numbers, as I posted on Twitter:

Ukraine Population, Jan 2022: 41,167,336
Civilian Deaths From War: 4,889
1 out of 8420 Ukrainian Civilians Killed
Chicago Population, 2020 Census: 2,746,388
Chicago Murders to in 2022, to Date: 398
1 out of 6900 Chicago Citizens Murdered
Do the math yourself. It checks out.
To look at the numbers a different way, 11.88 per 100,000 Ukrainian citizens have been killed from the ongoing invasion to date. 14.49 per 100,000 Chicago citizens have been murdered so far in 2022.

Granted, the Ukraine War didn’t start until February so Chicago gets over a month-and-a-half “advantage,” but we’re talking about murder in a major U.S. city versus a literal war zone. The numbers shouldn’t be this close.

    For 9 years, I was AA to the Vice Chairman of the Board and Chief Financial Officer of a very large insurance group. The only strange instructions he ever issued was 'Don't route me through O'Hare Airport'. Send me thru Atlanta. Now I understand.

      Went through O'Hare a long time ago. The thing that struck me is its incredibly haphazard construction. If you've ever played SimCity (the old one), it's like one of those where you plunk down the airport and the runways intersect. It's nuts.

    Very interesting statistic. Not sure what conclusion to draw from this. Perhaps that Chicago is a third-world country. Clearly leftist totalitarians would use this to argue for gun control. In the Ukraine, we have skilled, armed people actually, specifically trying to kill each other, and in Chicago we have angry amateurs. Quite clearly the failure is not access to weapons. This is a failure of Chicago's culture.

    Democrats have succeeded in destroying every big US city with their welfare-state politics (vote buying) and prevention of anti-crime measures (including blocking citizens' ownership of/convenient access to weapons for personal defense).

    Add to this 3M destitute 3rd-world "asylum-seekers" (at current count, due to become 5M at the current rate) ushered in by Biden and Mayorkas, who can only conceive of political gang warfare (of the most violent type) as practiced in their native lands; who will, out of rote ignorance, recreate those same conditions in the American cities/towns they settle in.

    As to your post, that's a great statistic for comparison, to put things in perspective. I have noticed that generally speaking, the real problems that we could solve we ignore, and the gigantic messes that we will never solve or that don't even exist, get all of our effort and attention.

      Yes especially problems that can’t be seen or quantified. Oh let’s see, hmmm ….like climate change or that pesky virus of which both shift like the wind
      For instance the new variant. Or Global warming.
      Flooding or draught.
      To your point 5 dead from monkey pox and the states of Ca NY and Ill.70,000,000. Million shutting down for it. Yet 378 dead per day from Fentynal
      And the boarder is overwhelmed with it. FuQ any of those fear mongering types look here, don’t look there no no that’s a campfire not your house burning down . I hate the sell out mind controll Nazis..

    From the night Biden announced they had just pulled off the biggest voter fraud in history, on TV, they have acted worse than any dictators. They have repeated ly threatened the public, ordered immune erasing vaccines on us, followed every Soros whim, from broder destruction to his picking Biden policy via Gov. for Impact, also funded by Soros. He attempted depopulation at UN quotas. He has made everything so expensive, the workin man is priced out. They hate capitalism, any religion, any sense of self which is not contrived such as pronoun choice! They want kids stupid and depraved. The Trump thing is to demoralize them, but hopefully, they wil rise up and kick them all out.We do not need childish Harris, nor bootjack Pelsi, the ultimate eliteist.

    It is best to not to compare deaths by different causes due to it being meaningless. E.g., what can be gotten from other death rates. About 3.25 million out of about 325 million or about 1 in 100 die in US die in a year from all causes, about 9000 per day. About 42000 per 330,000,000 died from traffic accidents in 2021 or 1 in 7857.
    Should US change driving on the right side of road to the left side because right side countries' rate of 22 per 100000 and left side countries' rate of 16 per 100000? It is the old comparison of apples and oranges fallacy but just interesting especially for death rates for chocking on peanut butter or being struck by lightning.

      Civilian deaths by war and citizens murdered is the comparison. It is not apples and oranges or people driving on what ever side of the street bs.

        The comparison is meaningless. They have different causes and thus incommensurable but to some they are interesting as were my examples.

          It is not meaningless if you are a human in the US and consider where and why we are sending $66.6 Billion dollars to Ukraine and doing nothing in Chicago. Oh yes I forgot Putin Bad. Never mind a washed mind.

              I see Dobrien's point and to an extent yours. That is, gun crime in Chicago is Chicago's problem. However, it is being touted as a contributing reason for national gun control and the eradication of Second Amendment rights for all Americans making it all of our problem.

            HAD to +1 this. I don't have a dog, but my son does and when I visit and put peanut butter on my toast in the morning his dog gets all upset if I don't give her some! She could be snoozing in another room, but crack the top on a jar of peanut butter and she'll be by your side in seconds, LOL!

              So, yes it is funny that humans can and do choke to death eating peanut butter as well as from allergies to it. Why not get congress involved and maybe take some of that war money to help the families of the dead and give reparations to those who were born because slavery happened, that includes both of us because had the past, slavery was wide spread, been different , there is little chance that most of us would exist, those "us" are self made and not implanted by some god. Different conditions, different selves.

                Ah, yes, reparations. I want reparations from descendants of American slaves for my ancestors that died freeing their ancestors, I want reparations from the Mongols and Chinese for bringing war and disease to Europe and killing my ancestors, I think African nations should be coughing up reparations for capturing and selling slaves to the world in the first place, I think North Africans and Arabs need to be offering reparations for all the Europeans they took as slaves. Really now?
