An assignment I give my students in almost every course I teach is what I call a questions and issues sheet. Students are asked to come up with a list of at least 25 questions and issues on a process design, product design, or failure analysis of my choosing. Students start by brainstorming either by themselves or in groups for 0.5 to 1 hour, and then categorize their questions and issues into the following categories: technical/engineering, economic, legal, regulatory, quality, environmental, safety, health, logistical, project management, and social impact. It is better for the questions and issues to be in the form of a question such that the question can be answered with a yes/no or a number. In that way, the exercise serves as a checklist to keep the project on track. Points are given for the number of questions, category coverage, identification of all of the key issues, depth of insight, creativity, and for thoroughness of the list. A critical issue not considered is often the project killer. Your assignment is to participate in this exercise for the development of a physical Atlantis.

jbrenner, can we have a quick voice chat? Email can be found at https://quberoot.wordpress.com/contact/ . I can give you my phone number on email. Alternatively if you use telegram by handle is dennisbob

These discussions only go so far.
There was a larger point I was trying to make: a location is irreverent at this stage. The specific individuals involved are important, if that step is overlooked, one can be pretty sure that every subsequent step will be a failure.

My hope in sending you here would be that you would see that we have already considered this. There were several months worth of discussions. We never could agree on a place to call Galt's Gulch.

You might not get a prompt reply to an 8+ year old topic.
Perhaps try starting a new topic yourself with your comments.

Most critical thing to do: find people who are 1) sufficiently smart, 2) philosophically aligned, 3) and perhaps more importantly sufficiently collaborating, well adjusted and intellectually wise.

It's an entire subject in itself on how one could potentially do that. If the appropriate people do not exist, everything else is a non-starter.

Side note: one could use the example that you gave to judge the smartness of somebody.
But it really could be any technical problem. This (i.e point 1) is actually the relatively easy part, ( not claiming it's easy)
Point 3 is the hardest. I would recommend tiny projects, to address .3 :

For example see my webpage section titled: "Examples of ventures that can start small: " :

and I think its mostly to avoid being a resident of any country, not specifically as a gulch. However, if you are independently wealthy or make your money outside the USA, I suspect it avoids income taxation in countries when you dont have residence there (except the US)

Correct, but ResidenceSea was only being discussed when this thread started four years ago.

It's a long book. Read the summaries at the end of each chapter first. There is a lot of interesting, and disturbing, history in it.

As for the mineral and good soil, that is what we are scouting for. Regarding the money, there will be no fractional reserve banking. If there is paper, it will be backed with an equal amount of coinage. For principles of Atlantis money, see The Creature from Jekyll Island by G. Edward Griffin.

It is beautiful! It may even be practical, and while we prepare whatever acreage we get, we can live aboard again, either anchored or maybe build a small dock for those of us who use boats. thanks !!

The Chile site sounds very good, but I do worry about that volatile South American continent. Fiji sounds like sheer heaven. Is there enough in the way of mineral and good soil to go with that amazing climate? Will Atlantis be a country sufficient unto itself, with coinage of its own? No paper, please...

Blueseed's idea was at least a factor of 10 worse in dollars per acre. The world would have to be REALLY desperate for me to pay that much.

There are some interesting ideas along the island line on Atlantis Locales right now--some that might be very promising.

" I wonder, though, if there is any way on this earth that can give enough bang for the buck... "
I think fixing up an old hotel is the best bang for the buck, but it lacks many of the virtues of a remote location. I like the idea of a small island off the US with an incubator / hackerspsace / hotel there. If it's part of the US, though, you lose the immigration benefit for startups with founders from different countries. I like Blueseed's notion of a ship, but their website has been down; I think they failed.

Probably not, and there is no way to know just hw many residents there would be on any given platform. I know what it was like to live aboard a 30' sailboat for 12 years, raising two kids as well, and it's a big difference from landlubbing! Even on a platform. I wonder, though, if there is any way on this earth that can give enough bang for the buck...

CircuitGuy and I did some investigation into seasteading, and that doesn't give a very high bang for the buck.
