Oh, AJ, I fear that they only teach history in a skewed and twisted manner. Over 10 years ago, I happened to nosily skim through one of the teens history books. I don't remember too much, of what I found, but I figured two presidents would stand out. They did but not the way I expected. Lincoln got less than 1/2 of a page and I could hardly find a reference to Washington. Certain events, mostly negative, appeared to be covered extensively. It was a time when my grandkids were moving from a Montessori school to public high school. The Montessori locally only went to 8th grade. I volunteered to drive them as far as needed to keep them out of public high school to no avail. I still needle my son about it.

What a f***ing liar. Bureau of Labor statistics show that the unemployment rate was 19 percent in 1938 after 5 years of FDRs Socialist policies.

From an estimated annual rate of 3.3 percent during 1923-29, the unemployment rate rose to a peak of about 25 percent in 1933. The economy reached its trough in 1933; but although unemployment had reached its peak, economic recovery was slow, hesitant, and far from complete. As shown below, the unemployment rate was still nearly 15 percent in 1940.

    Unemployment rate

    1923-29 3.3

    1930 8.9

    1931 15.9

    1932 23.6

    1933 24.9

    1934 21.7

    1935 20.1

    1936 17.0

    1937 14.3

    1938 19.0

    1939 17.2

    1940 14.6

    1941 9.9

    1942 4.7

Not a new complaint. The problem lies in tying the stock market crash too closely with the depression. The crash sucked a lot of investment capital and then the government with it's new found wealth jumped income tax from 7% to 77% which sucked more investment capital out of the market. Depression and joblessness went up after the stock market crash and in concert with the rise of government programs. Income tax followed by social security which orignally was to take care of the destitute and grew into a ponzi scam.

Looking at the figures you can say the only thing that pulled the US out of the muck and mire was World War II where unemployment shrunk to almost nothing.

The small amount ended up as the automatic 5% lop off the work force after WWII. Add in a few other items such as the drought years and losing millions of tons of topsoil to really bad farming practices

Immigration statistics support the contention the government programs failed see 1931 to 1940 then were held up by WWII

Highest immigration so far last decade of 20th century nine million first decade of 21st century 14 million. Mexico has been second behind Germany and ahead of United Kingdom. Europe ahead of the other continents and subcontinents excepting North America which became other parts of the world depending on the wars Asia primarly took it's turn Now Eastern Europe has had a large helpiong of slots. Overall to 1800 to 2010 Mexico Number Two.consistently. Europe in the late 1800s was high numbers due to the long periods of cold and lack of food production. Scandanavia and places like Ukraine contributed to USA and Canada in those periods.

But for the depression years it all quit. The only entity to blame was the government and government policies based on a switch to socialism and keynesian economics. The savior as they fast learned was war. Remains so to this day. Only question is when and where. Middle East or some new place for the next generations war stories.

      1901 - 1910 8,795,386 immigrants arrive in the US

      1911 - 1920 5,735,811 immigrants arrive in the US

      1921 - 1930 4,107,209 immigrants arrive in the US

1931 - 1940 532,431 immigrants arrive in the US (Great Depression)

      1941 - 1950 1,035,039 immigrants arrive in the US

Summary. The main culprit through out has been bad government policies and programs. But recall government and business has been for many decades two thirds of the control. Statist, corporatist, and union leaders.

What amazes me and has since the 60's, is how many of the conservatives and non-involved are so shocked when they see these figures, even today. This has been the most influential social and political undercurrent in this nation since the end of the 1800's reaching it's first peak in the mid 19teens, it's second in the mid 30's, it's third in the 60's, and maybe it's biggest gains in the last few years. And they seem to find it so hard to understand that the spread hasn't been from foreign influences, but home grown.

Read 'Atlas Shrugged', '1984', and 'Brave New World' as well as much of Heinlein's writings, pay a little attention and give a little study to what you're being told by those authors and guess what; you see the definition of the world we find ourselves in during this election season.

It's collectivism and statism vs individual freedom and rights. If you don't get and live the principles of liberty, you wind up with what we have today. And from what I read on this site on a daily basis the last several months, there's just not many Americans that care very much about freedom and liberty.

"Can't fix stupid". Lack of "critical thinking" and knowledge of history continues to show up in democrats supporters. A failure of the education process for the last several decades. These charts aptly illustrate the lefts refusal to recognize reality for what it is, undeniable.

Sloppy definitions of socialism and capitalism may have something to do with it. For instance, according to this poll (page 4) 38% of Americans have an unfavorable view of capitalism but only 21% have an unfavorable view of a free market system.
    https://reason.com/assets/db/14080250...

Another reason to promote "free markets" rather than "capitalism" when discussing economics with non-Objectivists.

That was an interesting poll, CBJ. Thank you for posting. I think that you are right in that 'how something is termed' greatly influences the results of the poll. I also note that the Reason poll was unavoidably biased in favor of 'people who were willing to take the time to answer a poll on the telephone'. That SO would not have included me!

I am one of the 48% of Clinton supporters who, according to the article, view socialism in a negative light.

I do believe wealth in the world should be more evenly distributed, but I don't think it should happen by stealing. I esp don't like the 99% rhetoric. If half the population wants to help the poor, not because someone is shaming them or using force but really wants to, I think that's a good thing. If 99% of the population is looking for a handout in some form or another, society collapses-- not because of ideology but because of math.

Curious, how does wealth become more evenly distributed without a degree of theft? Also, who determines what fair distribution is?

Killing crony capitalism would be a start - that would not involve theft. Elimination of other similar activity would also help ("Foundations" help those who can afford $50K/year in attorney fees escape tax laws the rest of us can't afford to play with, etc.)

Not sure about fair (not too concerned), but we should have a more level playing field.

How do you prevent a business man (or men, collectively as a corporation) from using the services of his friends businesses to their mutual benefit?

Who are you or I to tell people who they can and can't do business with?

Perhaps one business per business man, sound familiar? Maybe having an approved list of which businesses another business can go business with? Atlas Shrugged, no? Slippery slope.

"Crony capitalism," to me, means a business sponging off the State and demanding special privileges, contracts, and protections from his competitors. Recall Nathaniel Branden's phrase: "Big Business v. Capitalism."

To me it means "who you know" gets you the rewards...I scratch your back, you scratch mine. Unless we intend to remove factions (Lobbists), which are protected by the Constitution, there is no good solution short of socialism.. eg. Atlas Shrugged.

A chronicle of the left could be put into a book. the title? "Destroying American Capitalism, or how to get around the Constitution before the populace realizes what happened."

If it's whom you know in some other large entity, that matters only when you have significant legal barriers to entry. If it's whom you know in government, the solution is to enforce the Fifth Amendment to keep the government out of it.

Yes, the Fifth Amendment. In particular:

"No person shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law."

"Private property shall not be taken for public use, without just compensation."

And maybe we could use a reform to delineate just what a "public use" is. I would restrict that to "forts, magazines, arsenals, dockyards, and other needful buildings."

I believe that the solution to crony capitalism is quite simple but very difficult at the same time. The solution is a small limited government that sticks to it's original intent, that being the Constitution. The problem is the natural tendency of government is to grow both in size and in power, with the only control being an educated populous that hold them accountable and keeps them small. IMHO, every single problem we have today stems from the self governing not paying attention and the result is a government that has taken over our lives. :( The difficult and maybe impossible part is getting back to limited government.

No - not between businessmen and/or friends.
            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crony_c...

"Crony capitalism is a term describing an economy in which success in business depends on close relationships between business people and government officials. It may be exhibited by favoritism in the distribution of legal permits, government grants, special tax breaks, or other forms of state interventionism.[1][2] Crony capitalism is believed to arise when business cronyism and related self-serving behavior by businesses or businesspeople spills over into politics and government,[3] or when self-serving friendships and family ties between businessmen and the government influence the economy and society to the extent that it corrupts public-serving economic and political ideals."

When I was a photographer, here's how a fellow photographer got into the business. He was a baker. The Soviets (his word) came into his village and arrested the photographer/camera store owner. They then re-assigned the adults to their various jobs and had him take over the camera store. He knew nothing about it. Neither did the other people who were re-assigned. When he managed to get to the USA he decided he liked photography better than baking and went to school and learned the craft. The "Soviets" couldn't understand why the village's productiveness went from bad to worse a year later, which was when he decided to get the hell out of there.

it seems to me this guy is on the wrong forum. he contradicts himself by stating he supports Clinton and views socialism in a negative light. both socialism and Clinton should be viewed in a negative light.

CG, the major problem with that thesis is the concept of "should be more evenly distributed," because pretty much anyone who believes that is inevitably sucked into the problem called "if we want to achieve that, HOW shall we DO it."

That assumes that an external forcing factor (i.e., government) should be used or involved, and we've seen a lot of evidence of what happens after that.

But hey, rainbows and unicorns and Bernie and Hillary... Anything Is Possible, right?

      Right?

The problem with socialism is that it's only 7 lbs. of pressure on a trigger from becoming communism. The progressives, a hodgepodge of socialism, communism, new age and who knows what other BS is in the stew, can't see or understand any particular ingredient in the garbage they eat up.

History be d____d, as far as those college kids are concerned. They are convinced they are going to get what they feel (not think. Feel.) they deserve from socialism, as they know they'll never get it from capitalism. Only problem is, I don't care to hang around and see their faces when they realize they will not get the plum appointments they expected.

That's right. Humanities departments prepare their majors for one job only: a professorship. It is the cruelest scam I ever heard of. At least I majored in engineering. I never had designs on a university professorship.

These results make me furious...and damn motivated to build and protect my wealth & lifestyle while I still can. We have lots of wise commentary and comments here...but what are people here actually DOING to take PRO-ACTIVE control and robust DEFENSE against their standard of living?
We here are the ones that should be the best prepared and best situated to "pull a John Galt" when we decide our time is here. We see and understand everything that is happening, and where this will end up.
I'm working my plan...who else is willing and able to say that? Who else wants (or NEEDS) to be able to say that? Who else refuses to go over the cliff with the masses?
