An assignment I give my students in almost every course I teach is what I call a questions and issues sheet. Students are asked to come up with a list of at least 25 questions and issues on a process design, product design, or failure analysis of my choosing. Students start by brainstorming either by themselves or in groups for 0.5 to 1 hour, and then categorize their questions and issues into the following categories: technical/engineering, economic, legal, regulatory, quality, environmental, safety, health, logistical, project management, and social impact. It is better for the questions and issues to be in the form of a question such that the question can be answered with a yes/no or a number. In that way, the exercise serves as a checklist to keep the project on track. Points are given for the number of questions, category coverage, identification of all of the key issues, depth of insight, creativity, and for thoroughness of the list. A critical issue not considered is often the project killer. Your assignment is to participate in this exercise for the development of a physical Atlantis.

Well, truth be told, the early '80's is more than half my lifetime ago. 12 losses in a row is rather disheartening, though. That said, in all other sports than football, Army dominates the W/L record.

That's over half my lifetime ago!!! I think we started the contests in the early 90's or possibly the late 80's. There were no real conflicts back then. I am sure they are hurting the last 10 years or so...

Sometimes these reply trees give me a pain. I was replying to jpellone. He was rhapsodizing about his experiences in the Navy and, as he(?)seems to have the requisite knowledge base to judge, was asking for an opinion on my choices.

has an executive summary of their preliminary findings. It doesn't look like much of a value. I would rather be near a country that won't bother us than pay that much. One interesting thing, however, was the first comment about Honduras having passed legislation giving greater autonomy to developments like what we are discussing.

I responded to one of them saying that was of the order of magnitude of what I was thinking, but honestly I am one of the least qualified people in the Gulch to comment on the pluses and minuses of boats/ships of any kind, let alone ones that were used by a navy.

Have you seen my posts in the Lounge discussion about some possible naval assets? Tell me what you think.

It was interesting that's for sure. Since I trained air crews it was easy on a weekend off to go down the the flight line and hop a plane to somewhere I'd never been. It was fun. Depending on where we went the pilots would tell me to take the chevrons off and they'd get me a room in the BOQ. An upgrade from enlisted quarters, believe me.

That is a great resume. That work must have been exciting and challenging. Coincidence can be surprising -lol.

    Not in the early '80's!

Problem is of late, the only service academy that is putting people in harms way is the Army, and anyone capable is going to go to a different service. Not an excuse, but a reality.

The problem with naval warships is that there is a stipulation in the purchase agreement that they must be made unusable - don't want them being refit for use against us. Thus they are sold for scrap value, or to be used as man-made reefs.

71-76. Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital, NAS Pensacola Naval Aerospace Medical Institute, NAS Barbers Point, Low Pressure Chamber. Some reserve time at NAS Miramar and Pt. Mago/Port Hueneme. After the fall of Saigon it was to hard to make rate without having been FMF. OMG...as I'm typing this the Carolan at the bank is playing Anchors Away, lol.

Me too. 66-70, NAS Lemoore and Miramar, USS Enterprise and Ticonderoga and a couple of stints in country. Started as an Airdale, but I always respected those Black Shoes, though I'm not sure I would have really wanted to swap places with them.
Had a lot of fun with several in Alongapo, Yakuska, and Hong Kong along with some Aussie Black Shoes.
