A sign of the times? My neighbor dispute.

I'm amazed this needed to be said. Has society lost all of its common decency and mutual respect?

Dear Neighbor,

There is a line between our properties, defined by where my wall and your wall meet, which determines ownership. Ownership determines who can make use each property and how it's to be used. I'm writing this because there have been a few instances over the last year where you have seen fit to use the land on the side of my house, my private property, property I own because I pay for it, as your place to store your yard waste. I've been politely moving these branches and pulled weeds back onto your property in a fairly organized way as a subtle reminder that YOU HAVE NO RIGHT or PERMISSION to discard, store or temporarily place ANYTHING of yours on my land. Unfortunately you've chosen, again, to ignore this subtle reminder and put your stuff back on my property. In the spirit of being neighborly I'm writing to remind you that YOU HAVE NO RIGHT OR PERMISSION FROM ME TO BE ON OR PLACE ANYTHING ON MY LAND in hopes that plain English will get through where object lessons have not. I'd greatly appreciate it if you'd follow my example and put your yard waste in the alley or, if bulk trash is a fair distance away, store YOUR TRASH in your back yard until bulk trash is schedules to be picked up.

I do not think this is too much to ask. In fact, I assumed that most people would have the decency to understand this minor degree of respect toward their neighbor and that neighbors property. Suffice it to say, I have a copy of this letter and will use it as proof of "reasonable communication" with you with the proper authorities if you continue putting your trash on my land.

I appreciate your cooperation,

Your Neighbor

Franky, I'm shocked this had to be written.

Actually, I plan on picking up a private property sign tomorrow and putting up a staked wire fence. I'll take pictures of everything and if he does anything to it or anything comes onto my yard it will be fuel toward the case against him.

Term2 and Olduglycarl are right. You have a Democrat on your hands. Can you get your hands on a "Trump for President" sign and stick it in their yard. One supporting the NRA would work, too. I'm sure that you can think of some others. The local Republican headquarters should be able to supply you with enough stuff. If he/she isn't home that much, the signs might go unnoticed for awhile.

UPDATE: The letter I wrote my neighbor was found torn up and thrown all over the side of my house along with my make-shift no-dumping/private property sign and the yard waste. As a consequence, I took ample pictures of all of it, cleaned up the mess and reported my neighbor for three things
    1. Illegal dumping
    2. Destruction of private property (the no dumping sign that was clearly on my land)
    3. Trespassing (to get to my sign.

I'm very annoyed after the shredding of my sign and letter. Rather than expand this into a feud, which it may well anyway, I'd just as soon get the proper authorities involved.

Its remarkable to me that this has gone this far.

He/they are never home. If I ever saw them I gladly would have approached them. The next best thing was to move the pile across the property line in a neat stack (which I did twice). Only after they put their trash back on my property did I make a sign (which was torn up and scattered on my yard) and then a note was written (above, which they ignored since the stack is back across my yard again).

Do you recall the video clip of the 'magic table'. This clip, while humorous, was a big AHA! to me. Please be aware that by disposing of the neighbor's trash, you are being a 'magic table'; you are essentially enabling the behavior.

You are far from the only person to have had this trouble. If you Search for the keywords, you will find many people who have had this problem; you will find many recourses and suggestions as well.

When the state doesn't respect your property don't expect your neighbors to. Most will however there are some that are always lazy expecting others to take care of their responsibilities whether it is trash or giving them your property because they think they should have it.

Well, its apparent even after a letter that my neighbor just doesn't give a damn, the trash is back in my yard. Now I weigh the consequences of reporting him to the city and having to live beside him until he moves (I suspect they rent). Joy.

While it would give me a degree of satisfaction to have this person cited I'm also considering just dumping the trash myself to end the nonsense (several can trips to the back alley - 3/4 the way around my house). Yes, its goes against principle for me to let this slide but I'm not entirely sure I want to kickoff tension that could last months or years.

I'm going to sleep on this.

Perhaps it would have been better to speak or write
to the neighbor rather than use "object lessons".
Better not to give anyone a handle to accuse you of
taking the law into your own hands.

lol, I haven't thought of that song in years.

"They was taking plaster tire tracks, foot prints, dog smelling prints, and
they took twenty seven eight-by-ten colour glossy photographs with circles
and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one explaining what each
one was to be used as evidence against us. Took pictures of the approach,
the getaway, the northwest corner the southwest corner and that's not to
    mention the aerial photography.

After the ordeal, we went back to the jail. Obie said he was going to put
us in the cell. Said, "Kid, I'm going to put you in the cell, I want your
wallet and your belt." And I said, "Obie, I can understand you wanting my
wallet so I don't have any money to spend in the cell, but what do you
want my belt for?" And he said, "Kid, we don't want any hangings." I
said, "Obie, did you think I was going to hang myself for littering?""

Now i have to listen to it again...I need a long drive

Just a short hop from litterbug to felon, ask the crew from "Alices Restaurant"... We use a product called "tanglefoot" for yellow fly traps we make, basically it s the sticky stuff on flypaper, comes in a small tub at nurseries, it is non toxic, seems a thoughtful neighbor would coat some of the trash with it before returning it to the owner - just so it won`t blow away. On a completely unrelated topic, tanglefoot is tough to get off your hands.

Sorry, I did not know you tried face to face already. Time to put up a fence or call the police and make a formal complaint or both. Or plant a really tall hedge along the border. :-)

As I wrote somewhere in this thread, I never see these people. In the past Ive knocked on their door several times without answer and I seldom see a car in their driveway for days The letter was written after two attempts to move his yard water across the property line and a sign was put up (which he shredded and threw on my yard). This isn't the first occurance, but it is the first time theyve ignored my request to respect my property line.

OMG! A simple polite face to face conversation should suffice! Or put up a fence. This is a mountain out of a mole hill letter. Sorry. But I believe in the direct approach.

adjacent to where my property is is his carport (a covered slab of concrete where cars park to keep out of the Phoenix sun). When I moved his yard waste from my yard it was nearly piled where his car would go. Unfortunately that hint did not work.

Quite right. Ridiculous. The very old lady that lives next to my mom (old lady) throws her yard trash into my moms back yard.

My brother was musing with her...”surprising that all this stuff from your trees blew over here. Just strange.” Blank stare.

I once had a neighbor who chose to walk his dog in front of my house for the dogs place to relieve himself. So I shoveled it up and neatly place it on his front door step. when that didn't work the next time he came down the street I grabbed the dogs lead and lifted him up so he was chocking and told the guy I would kill the dog if he came back and that finally got to him.
In your case just place all of the waste on his front steps. of course you can't threaten him but it may get through to him. And you could put dog pooh under it first.

    Close:
Letter. Sign, pics and threat of civil suit.

It's really quite silly that it may come to this.

I would have approached them at the first occurrence but they seem to work during the day and are home late at night 11PM+. Truthfully, mainly because I've been in this house for 23 years, I would prefer to keep things civil and informal if I can help it just to avoid awkward tension (like now).

I'm not sure why exactly, but this stuff really pisses me off. I can't let this slide.

I bet that your neighbor voted for Hillary in 2016. In my book, all I need to know about someone is whether they voted for Hillary or not. If they did, they are dead to me and I expect no good will come from them. They will not respect me, and would use any means to get what they want. So far, I have been pretty much right on this. I understand that it might not be 100% perfect as a way to judge people, but its better than anything else than I can learn by the answer to one 5 second question.

Writing the letter and mailing it registered with a signature would have been my second step. At the first instance of this dumping I would have approached the neighbor and kindly asked him/her to remove their garbage from my property and to not do it again. Some folks are thicker than bricks and need to be shown the boundary and explained the principal. I would never have cleaned up their trash placed in my yard. Take photos of them in the act and hire a very expensive clean up crew to come and take it away and then present them with the bill that you paid. If they refuse to pay the bill then it is off to small claims court with your letter and the 8X10 color glossy photos. It is very sad you have to resort to such depths but this is a rather common occurrence in today's society.
I deal with this on a different level living on a 1 mile long loop road from the main road with just 3 homes. The landfill charges $2 per bag but it is much easier and less expensive to just dump it on my road where no homes can see it being dumped. The town pick it up as long as a bear doesn't drag it all over and they find an envelope with address and the Sheriff presents a ticket for littering with a $250 fine and the judge listens to no excuses.

Some people are just plain sorry with there being no help for it.
The above statement has inspired a new dino thought that relates~There be gnats and mosquitoes.
Another related new thought~Yeah, but at least it is legal to swat insect pests.
Yet another new related thought~Why can't they make sorry people repellent that we can rub on?
