I recommend "Notes of Debates in the Federal Convention of 1787 Reported by James Madison".
The text is a little hard to read at time. Madison uses many abbreviation and spellings (obviously) of the colonial period.
It is well worth the effort. It lays open to all to see justwhat went into the making of the U>S> Constitution. It opens the proceedings to todays people and lets them start to understand what is /was meant by each article and amendment.
Note: I got my copy from Amazon in paperback.

I've enjoyed looking at it for years. I remember pouring over it during Watergate trying to see what they thought was "high crimes and misdemeanors". Interestingly, they seem to have just tossed off the line without debate and moved on.

There are several lines like that in the constitution. It appears that there was a well understood common definition for the terms and the framers didn't think it need a definition or example.
Bless their hearts, they didn't foresee a mess like our current government has become.
