The Richard Halley Complex

The important thing to understand is that movie gross numbers are a kind of popularity contest, and it is obvious that the intent of the film runs counter to that message. I would suspect that everyone involved with the film can understand right now how Richard Halley felt during his concert. Not everyone had the hears to hear the music he was playing. They may come to it in time, but they don't quite hear the notes right at the moment. Halley left to play his music only for those who could listen to the music.

This is simply making excuses for failure. Ayn Rand wrote "Atlas Shrugged" to popularize her beliefs. The producers of the movies made them to popularize (a carefully selected subset of) her beliefs. An inability to make the slightest dent in the box office - failing to make the top 10 with a wide release - means they have failed in their attempt to bring Rand into the mainstream.

I say it's time for a new paradigm. I would enthusiastically support an Atlas Shrugged: Part III financing model built on the kind of BitCoin funding program Donate@Home is:

Once a person "hears" the AS message they are changed. When I drive cross country, my constant companion is a disk containing the audiobook of Atlas Shrugged. It never fails to re-inspire me, and the miles just disappear. A 14 hour 1000 mile driving day would be nearly impossible without that inspiration.
