Why Islam is incompatible with the principles of free thought
I can support the freedom of religion only insofar as a religion respects the right of free will and free thought. I can not respect a religion that uses force or coercion like this. It is antithetical to not only the Constitution, but to all who value the freedom of thought and expression.
Islam is COMPLETELY incompatible with the US Constitution and our way of life. All thing in Islam, good or bad, success or failure, are of allah and lying, murdering, slaughtering and deception are just fine against non-islamic people in the effort to subjugate them.
It's the POLITICAL and MILITANT aspect of islam we need to be EDUCATED and CONCERNED about. It is those two tenants that are bringing the non-muzzies to their deaths. The religious part is a non-factor.

Iraqi Christians .... flee the northern city of Mosul under threat of forced conversion or execution.... homes and property confiscated. Monks....allowed to take only the clothes they were wearing.
"There is not a single Christian family left in Mosul. The last one was a disabled Christian woman. .... They came to her and said you have to get out and if you don't we will cut off your head with a sword. "They took our money, gold, even the earrings from their [women's] ears. They took everything, even mobile phones"

Islamic State (Isis) militants have blown up a revered Muslim shrine traditionally said to be the burial place of the prophet Jonah in Mosul
Comment: A similar regime took power in 1933.

I completely agree. There can be no peace as long as either A) free will exists and people are allowed to choose their own belief system or B) Islam continues to exist. Why? Because as cited in their holy texts, there is no tolerance in Islam for free thought.
What most people don't understand is that the Crusades were more about pushing back the Islamic hordes from taking over Europe than they were about the Holy Land. Vienna was one of the centers of influence and they banded with several other southern European players to field a massive navy and army to fend off the impending Islamic incursions they knew were coming. Some very interesting historical stuff.
Vlad would be disgusted today if he knew what has become of europe.
This suggests that: over the past ~1200 years previous Islamic regimes in that area were not as violent as the current one. and, going by the rule of land ownership used by the Islamists, the Christians were there first so it belongs to them.
I think the incident does highlight two important aspects of ISIS' mentality: a distinct intolerance of others' ideas, the militancy required to intentionally destroy them, and a regional government that is powerless to do anything to stop them. To me, that is a very threatening combination of elements to anyone who still resides in the area and a potent reminder to the rest of us how fortunate we are to live in a land that still (mostly) wouldn't permit that kind of thing.
