A Brief Moment of Pride

I'm now in eleventh grade, and last year was my last chance to enter the Anthem essay contest. I did so several months ago and forgot until a few days ago, when the email came in.

Third place! (Granted there are 10 3rd place winners, but still cool.) Earned a pretty penny for my essay, and a free book. I chose The Fountainhead, to replace my torn up copy; the rest I already have.

Now it's time to tackle The Fountainhead essay. ;)

Due to some reading tonight, my memory was jogged and I thought of you.
You have something else to tell your brother.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle penned The Lost World on which the 1925 silent movie was based.
Before he wrote that, he completed his Sherlock Holmes series of mostly short stories.
I read some if not most of those stories in a hardcover book I bought during the 70s.
I know I did not read them all because Sherlock's arch rival Professor Moriarty was not in any of them.
Click the link and scroll down to find The Lost World mentioned under "Other Works."

Sarah, my guess is that something you said in that essay was unique and important. I do hope you will find out if you can post it in the Gulch for us. I promise you we will learn something from it. Most of us are old-timers, 😁, and ideas of a fresh young mind are precious.

Congratulations Sarah! I would like to echo the sentiments of many here that are beaming with pride at the accomplishments of a strong young women who gives us a glimmer of hope for the future. Helps one to understand the feelings of Dr. Akston. Keep up the good work.

That's something I need to remind myself of; even though sometimes I don't feel like my essay was that great, other people thought so.
I will never lose sight of this community of friends. I'm always happy to see familiar faces like yours. :)

Maybe I should sue writer Michael Crichton, who ignored Allosaurus in his first two (maybe the only books) Jurassic Park novels.
He lifted The Lost World title off a previous novel and a silent movie in which an allosaur was called a "pest."
He also renamed "Eaters of the Dead" written by a medieval Arab (that I read during the 60s), retitled it "The Thirteenth Warrior," and passed it off as his own work.
You may find it amusing to scroll through the flick in which Allosaurus beat T-Rex for appearing in a movie. Jurassic rock layers may be older that Cretaceous, but allosaur fossils were also dug up first.

Allosaurus did not walk so upright as did T-Rex in many a movie.. It was during the 80s that paleontologists figured out that theropod carnosaurs were tail-balancing teeter-totters.
The Jurassic Park movies got it right.

Sarah, I for one am impressed. This is a significant achievement. You have been judged as outstanding by your peers, by people who you admire. That's an honor that has been earned, not bestowed. You have a wonderful life ahead of you, and I hope you continue to share in the Gulch.

Thank you, dukem. I will keep that promise as long as I'm here in the Gulch, and do my best to steer my peers in the right direction. I can't do a lot alone, but with the encouragement and backing of the Gulchers I've found it easier and easier to do more. I will, to the best of my ability.

Ah ha, I see. I just haven't seen her comment on anything for a long time; perhaps that's my fault for being so inactive?

You poor thing! We'll file suit right away! Most of the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park weren't from that period. But somehow Cretaceous Park doesn't have the same ring to it.

Way to go. The choice of the Fountainhead is awesome. I read it the first time when I was in the 11th grade. I stillhave the old paperback. It is getting rather worn now so I have a Kindle version. Pages don't fall out of that one.
Good luck with the Fountainhead essay.

I didn't know that Sara was in The Gulch either. It's nice to know that a smart, young person is among us. It will keep us on our toes.
