An expression we've heard all our lives, but it just occurred to me that if there are dead doornails, there must have once been LIVE doornails.
what did they eat? what killed them? a friend proposed that they were always dead, and I thought that was just silly.
what do you think?

He is. We tolerate him because he's a veteran of WWII. Did I say 80? He's actually 90. When he comes to coffee we only talk about all the other things (women & sex mostly), just not politics.

Why thank you! I am certain that you are hopelessly degenerate too.

Nice to have a 'common' culture, eh?

Because it wasn't warming, the terms have been altered to "Climate Change." Now we can have "Greenhouse Gases" cause extra cooling in "polar vortices." If you try to keep up, they'll have to work harder to obfuscate. Just turn on "American Idle" and absorb their reality: There was no Doornail Holocaust by the Hammers!

Nothing but trouble. Now I must change an expression I've used 20 or 30 times (in talking politics) to a bag instead of box, as a non political superlative for dumb.

I heard that the expression came from the time when
nails were routinely re-used. . but nails which had
been used to build doors were bent over after being
nailed through the wood, which made them unavailable
    for re-use. -- j

I think a box of rocks is smarter than a bag of rocks, because at least it gets the point - more than one, in fact.

I guess not the same, the one I knew was named Marlene, everyone got a turn. Oh, and then there was another, but I forget her name, it was a longtime ago. I think my old coffee friend Don (age 80) is now dating Moochalot.

If they were ever alive, it might get confusing. Like 'dumber than a box of rocks' might cause one to wonder if a basket of rocks was smarter, and then a bag of rocks, and then a handful, a riverbed, a gravel pit of rocks....

"What great doornails!" just does not have the right ring to it, so to speak.

A Leftist Approach: Since everything in the Universe is made of the same stuff, who is to say what is dead or alive? Nails should have the same rights as everyone else.

I am more interested in "knockers" but them I have always been accused (rightfully) of having a prurient sense of humor.

Thank you for the information! It's excellent! Shakespeare is responsible for so many words - what did they call a young dog before he invented the word "puppy", I wonder?

I don't know about door nails, but I do know a few door knobs....you know...everyone gets a turn.

I found this possible origin online, it's not quite as lively as your living doornail idea but you made me curious:

"Doornails are the large-headed studs that were used in earlier times for strength and more recently as decoration. The practice was to hammer the nail through and then bend the protruding end over to secure it. This process, similar to riveting, was called clenching. This may be the source of the 'deadness', as such a nail would be unusable afterwards."

Apparently the phrase dates back to at least the 1300's and was used by Shakespeare.
