An expression we've heard all our lives, but it just occurred to me that if there are dead doornails, there must have once been LIVE doornails.
what did they eat? what killed them? a friend proposed that they were always dead, and I thought that was just silly.
what do you think?

If they were ever alive, it might get confusing. Like 'dumber than a box of rocks' might cause one to wonder if a basket of rocks was smarter, and then a bag of rocks, and then a handful, a riverbed, a gravel pit of rocks....

I heard that the expression came from the time when
nails were routinely re-used. . but nails which had
been used to build doors were bent over after being
nailed through the wood, which made them unavailable
    for re-use. -- j

Because it wasn't warming, the terms have been altered to "Climate Change." Now we can have "Greenhouse Gases" cause extra cooling in "polar vortices." If you try to keep up, they'll have to work harder to obfuscate. Just turn on "American Idle" and absorb their reality: There was no Doornail Holocaust by the Hammers!
