    Here we go again...

No one is wrong 100% of the time. Marx was right with: "Religion is the opiate of the masses".

Using islam to focus and control people for power is in no way different than what has been going on in all religions for centuries.

Either step up and support a 100% secular society, with no religious basis for legislation, or shut up about what other non-secular people's motivation. In both cases it is to scare little children with eternal damnation so one can make them do what one wants, probably because one lacks the ability to articulate why doing the right thing is good for one..which would be Objectivism.

"Using islam to focus and control people for power is in no way different than what has been going on in all religions for centuries."

Come on. This is demonstrably false. You wouldn't claim that the Hindus (one of the most populous religions next to Islam) are out there trying to force people to convert by threatening them with death. Or the Buddhists. Or even the Christians. You can't lump in every philosophy and religion into the same boat.

Everyone in life has to choose what philosophy or religion is going to guide their life. There are philosophies that use coercion and there are those that use persuasion. All I'm trying to point out here is the tacit admission by one of this religion's own adherents that the religion does in fact advocate the use of coercion and force to further its purposes. Islam IS very different than other religions.

Blarman, you know well that christians have demanded people convert or die. This is demonstrably true, as are overwhelming atrocities by christianity. In addition, requiring conversion is not the only method of holding power of someone else.

Hindus and muslims had a pretty entertaining time in northwestern India. The hindus have conducted various mob attacks against muslims, and vice versa. I'm pretty sure these weren't organized by secular people.

I haven't really looked into buddhist atrocities, but I'll bet you all the beer you can drink, that they exist. Here is a Time Magazine article on buddhist anti-muslim violence.
        http://time.com/3090990/how-an-extremist...

You also know, I would never put philosophy and religion into the same boat, as we have discussed. One is testable and can be objectively examined and changed to adapt to results. The other is dogma.
Dogma, can be put into one boat, perhaps a big one, but it is just so much nonsense. Here is just another example of the sad foolishness it breeds:
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_uWMOZ0v...

Islam is just the most violent religion right now.

The HUGE difference is that neither the Buddhist, Christian or Hindu creeds justify violence. Their respective creeds say just the opposite. That was the whole point of my post. Islam's creed and the actions of their adherents match. Christians, Buddhists, and Hindus who go on murderous rampages are condemned by their own spiritual books. That's the difference. You don't have to agree with their creeds, but to retain any intellectual honesty, you have to admit this crucial difference.

I have heard many conflicting reports about what the Koran requires today.

The Koran holds many contradictory passages. How to resolve the contradictions? By applying the Abrogation Principle. Simply put, the verse more recently written takes precedence.

But no one has shown me a definitive, properly attested list of the verses in the order of their writing. So those who claim the Fighting Words are abrogated, haven't adequately shown that.

And in any case, those doing the fighting, clearly believe the Fighting Words are in full force and effect. And they act on it.

Now comes a legal scholar saying flatly: they who call themselves "moderate Muslims" are lying. Strategically lying to advance the faith.

I have read the Qu'ran and talked with Muslims about religion face-to-face, including an ex PLO member who was brutally honest. If you don't know who the Palestinian Liberation Organization is, they were the Palestinian terrorists under Yassar Arafat who eventually became Hamas and Fatah. Though he was a member of the "propaganda" wing of the party, he was very honest when he said that the Qu'ran makes it very clear that there are two classes of people: believers and infidels (everyone else) and that believers have more rights.

A=A. I also wrote a small piece on this topic. People are slowly starting to realize A=A.

I have compiled a "BRIEF" list of basic tenets of the Quran and the "Islamic" commentaries on the Quran. So much for peaceful.

These people that are being called "terrorists" are by definition GOOD Muslims. These are Fundamentalists who ARE following their religion as it is written and how it IS to be practiced.

Do not be fooled by the "moderate peaceful" Muslims, they are NOT practicing their faith properly.

The fundamental Islamists are going after ALL infidels. this is not just against Jews but ANYONE who is not practicing the tenets of the Quran.

Notice ALL of the passages are open ended. They are not written in context to ONLY apply to the time their prophet was on this earth.

BEWARE when the rest of the so-called "Moderate", "Peaceful" Muslims decide to start practicing their religion according to their Holy Book.

        The Quran:
Quran (2:191-193) - "And kill them wherever you find them, and turn them out from where they have turned you out. And Al-Fitnah [disbelief or unrest] is worse than killing...
but if they desist, then lo! Allah is forgiving and merciful. And fight them until there is no more Fitnah [disbelief and worshipping of others along with Allah] and worship is for Allah alone. But if they cease, let there be no transgression except against Az-Zalimun (the polytheists, and wrong-doers, etc.)"

Quran (2:244) - "Then fight in the cause of Allah, and know that Allah Heareth and knoweth all things."
Quran (2:216) - "Fighting is prescribed for you, and ye dislike it. But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that ye love a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knoweth, and ye know not."
Quran (3:56) - "As to those who reject faith, I will punish them with terrible agony in this world and in the Hereafter, nor will they have anyone to help."
Quran (3:151) - "Soon shall We cast terror into the hearts of the Unbelievers, for that they joined companions with Allah, for which He had sent no authority".

Quran (4:74) - "Let those fight in the way of Allah who sell the life of this world for the other. Whoso fighteth in the way of Allah, be he slain or be he victorious, on him We shall bestow a vast reward."
Quran (4:95) - "Not equal are those believers who sit (at home) and receive no hurt, and those who strive and fight in the cause of Allah with their goods and their persons. Allah hath granted a grade higher to those who strive and fight with their goods and persons than to those who sit (at home). Unto all (in Faith) Hath Allah promised good: But those who strive and fight Hath He distinguished above those who sit (at home) by a special reward,-"
Quran (4:104) - "And be not weak hearted in pursuit of the enemy; if you suffer pain, then surely they (too) suffer pain as you suffer pain..."
Quran (5:33) - "The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His messenger and strive to make mischief in the land is only this, that they should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned; this shall be as a disgrace for them in this world, and in the hereafter they shall have a grievous chastisement"
Quran (8:12) - "I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them"
Quran (8:39) - "And fight with them until there is no more fitna (disorder, unbelief) and religion should be only for Allah"
Quran (8:57) - "If thou comest on them in the war, deal with them so as to strike fear in those who are behind them, that haply they may remember."
Quran (9:14) - "Fight against them so that Allah will punish them by your hands and disgrace them and give you victory over them and heal the breasts of a believing people."
Quran (9:20) - "Those who believe, and have left their homes and striven with their wealth and their lives in Allah's way are of much greater worth in Allah's sight. These are they who are triumphant."
Quran (9:30) - "And the Jews say: Ezra is the son of Allah; and the Christians say: The Messiah is the son of Allah; these are the words of their mouths; they imitate the saying of those who disbelieved before; may Allah destroy them; how they are turned away!"
Quran (9:38-39) - "O ye who believe! what is the matter with you, that, when ye are asked to go forth in the cause of Allah, ye cling heavily to the earth? Do ye prefer the life of this world to the Hereafter? But little is the comfort of this life, as compared with the Hereafter. Unless ye go forth, He will punish you with a grievous penalty, and put others in your place."
Quran (9:41) - "Go forth, light-armed and heavy-armed, and strive with your wealth and your lives in the way of Allah! That is best for you if ye but knew."
(9:42) - "If there had been immediate gain (in sight), and the journey easy, they would (all) without doubt have followed thee, but the distance was long, (and weighed) on them"
Quran (48:29) - "Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. And those with him are hard (ruthless) against the disbelievers and merciful among themselves"
Quran (61:4) - "Surely Allah loves those who fight in His way" Religion of Peace, indeed! The verse explicitly refers to "battle array" meaning that it is speaking of physical conflict. This is followed by (61:9): "He it is who has sent His Messenger (Mohammed) with guidance and the religion of truth (Islam) to make it victorious over all religions even though the infidels may resist."

Bukhari (11:626) - [Muhammad said:] "I decided to order a man to lead the prayer and then take a flame to burn all those, who had not left their houses for the prayer, burning them alive inside their homes."
Muslim (20:4645) - "...He (the Messenger of Allah) did that and said: There is another act which elevates the position of a man in Paradise to a grade one hundred (higher), and the elevation between one grade and the other is equal to the height of the heaven from the earth. He (Abu Sa'id) said: What is that act? He replied: Jihad in the way of Allah! Jihad in the way of Allah!"
Ibn Ishaq/Hisham 484: - “Allah said, ‘A prophet must slaughter before collecting captives. A slaughtered enemy is driven from the land. Muhammad, you craved the desires of this world, its goods and the ransom captives would bring. But Allah desires killing them to manifest the religion.’”

Most religions have modified their aggressive behavior over the years. No one follows the edicts of violence in the old testament. Religions have moved along with civilization. Except for Islam. The religion caters to the Arab disposition for violence. Whether they were called Saracens, or Muslims or Barbary pirates, they have been fighting and murdering fellow human for fourteen hundred years -- probably longer. As much as it makes me sound like a bigot, truth is truth.

You and al Qaeda tell people who believe in god that their god wants them to murder. This fuels the enemies of liberty.

I should have said "extremists tell people" to avoid putting words in anyone's mouths.

If you get people knowledgeable with scripture, they can go back and forth citing passages that supposedly tell believes to act this way or that way in the modern world.

Extremists use that. They find scripture that supposedly tell disillusioned people that god calls on them to commit murder. Families and faith institutions should at the very least be sure these confused people are exposed to mainstream religious practice.

If someone wanted to make the problem of extremism worse, they'd tell those confused teenagers, "the extremists are right. Your religion calls on you to murder."

We are seeing history play out before our eyes. The Muslims are taking over Europe like they took over North Africa. North Africa was, at one time before Islam, almost 100% Christian. Piece by piece they get into positions power and then exclude non-Muslims. The non-Muslims are forced to convert to Islam or suffer a live beheading.

Every belief system carries within its DNA the command to prevail, to take over totally, and if necessary to kill all those it cannot convert. Every idea wants to live and, in the extreme, to destroy the hosts of ideas at variance with itself.

Belief systems have a strong hot core of ultra devotees, with the lesser or more moderate ones in orbit around them, who may become more tightly drawn in over time, especially if they meet forceful opposition and need to gear up defenses.

This is the tragedy of minds misprogrammed by faith. Faith is intellectual suicide. It leaves minds defenseless against the cancerous growth of chaotic thought patterns, with only rationalization as their tool. This is the tragedy, and irony, of our time: that magnificent technological achievements must share cultural space with the murderous mind virus of blind belief that persuades its adherents that their religion is more important than their life. That is the ultimate wildcard in their deck. And Reason sits in the corner and weeps.

We have had this argument many times before. I will simply state (again) that I totally disagree with this view of Islam and with the view that all Muslims are violent.

    Nuff said.

I am pretty sure nobody has indicated anyplace in this forum that ALL Muslims are violent.

Only that the "GOOD" Muslims who "follow" their Koran are violent.

This is why ISIS kills other Muslims. They are NOT practicing the Koran properly. When the rest of the Muslims decide they also want to follow the Quran....well you figure that out.

I would not rely on (mythological) texts, such as the Old or New Testaments, nor the Koran, as what actually defines a "believer". Especially in one lumped together group.
Rather than use some book, base your views on the person or groups actual statements, positions, and actions.

For instance, I would not use the following to define or describe most Christians I have known:

Any city that doesn’t receive the followers of Jesus will be destroyed in a manner even more savage than that of Sodom and Gomorrah. Mark 6:11

Don’t associate with non-Christians. Don’t receive them into your house or even exchange greeting with them. 2 John 1:10

Judge other religions for not following Christ:
Whoever denies “that Jesus is the Christ” is a liar and an anti-Christ. 1 John 2:22

Christians are “of God;” everyone else is wicked. 1 John 5:19

    The non-Christian is “a deceiver and an anti-Christ” 2 John 1:7

      hattrup:
Now show me where it tells the "Christian" to go out and KILL the non-believer. Keep in mind Christianity is based on and the fulfillment of the Old Testament in the Death of Jesus who issued TWO command.

Also your quote is NOT quite right. Please quote it correctly:

1jo 5:19 We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies in the wicked [one].

Again your quote is VERY misleading.
2jo 1:7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world, they who do not confess Jesus Christ coming in flesh -- this is the deceiver and the antichrist.

If you are going to quote the bible to prove a point, please not only quote it correctly but also IN context. Ayn Rand did not "deceive" people with half truths, but TOTAL complete reason. You cannot reason when you mis-represent something.

one thing i have learned about muslims is that they lost the ability to think 2000 or 3000 years ago or even longer that that ago.
today we see they do not think and the greatest non-thinker of the times is 0! he sits with advisers and says we have to do this and if the says 0 we can do that he does not hear the adviser. 0 only knows what he wants to do whether it makes sense or not. 0 is not peaceful as he relishes the actions taken by his brothers in the middle east towards non-muslims and of course if a muslim happens to buy the farm he does not care because he knows they will be rewarded for what they have done. we live with a terrible situation.

Islam as a world religion started up around 600 AD and was advocated by Mohammed, who used it as a philosophical ideology to kill or forcibly convert the region over the next 400 years. When the Byzantine Empire (Greek Orthodoxy) began to collapse, it led to the rise of the Ottoman Empire (Islam/Attaturk) and its expansion.
