Here is an example of how the media will just keep munching on a corpse till it outgasses, even when it has been dead 30 years. If Bill Cosby did anything, and the huge number of supposed "victims" keeps growing daily, one would think at least one of them would have filed a police report. Good grief, they couldn't keep the Gruber crap under wraps for even 4 years, and Bill Cosby has kept his "secrets" for 30? Doesn't make sense...

A number of the women involved have explained why they didn't try to file, or how they tried and were deterred.

And now? What is their motive? Since they apparently need a reason to come forward...

The impression I got is that they're coming forward now because they feel like they'll be believed, and to support each other.

I am not sure that that makes a lot of sense. A person so violated would (i assume) be enraged and incensed about it to where they would not stop until they were vindicated. 30 years is a long time. I do understand that there are probably a lot of other factors that may enter into this, things said and done that were not public (as in some of the threats and deals) but once you give in on a action, you lose a lot of credibility. The man is ancient now, it just doesnt seem right to be coming out of the woodwork, and the previous claims never seemed to get traction. The problem is all the accusers lost their chance to have real evidence, the one who claims she woke up with semen had the golden DNA bullet and lost it. With no hard evidence their claims are just that: claims.

Well, let's say you're right and it didn't really happen. Looking at some of the things that have been said about them, what would be their motivation for coming forward now?

And, given some of the things that are being said about the women, even in this day and age, can you understand why women might have been hesitant to speak up about this 30 years ago?

Or are you suggesting that even if it did happen, if they didn't speak up about it at the time, they're SOL? What do you think should be the length of time someone should have the right to bring up this sort of thing?

It's not a question of the right to do it, it is a question of the validity of the claim. There are limits to what you can claim against someone and the burden of proof. With no DNA, no video, no witnesses, no nuthin, what is fair? Mr. Cosby may (and I mean may) have done the deed, and then again, may not. These women have a burden of proof to meet, before they start yelling about it, and none of them have produced anything but claims. Not even a police report I am aware of. That is the problem with claims against anyone, if you do not have some proof, who is going to play God, read minds, and decide who is telling the truth and who isn't? Mr. Cosby is wisely satying silent, because anything he says can and will be used against him, or twisted in some fashion to make a case.

And this is why they didn't say anything in the first place. Ironically, what started this up again was a comedian who made jokes about it in his routine, and then people started speaking up and it started getting some traction.

I, too, am uneasy about the burden of proof and the pile-on character assassination. On the other hand, I keep wondering, why would the women be bringing this attention on themselves at this point if there wasn't some truth to it? What would be their motivation?

I'd like to think that we can agree that 30 years ago, when Mr. Cosby was much more powerful in the industry and mores were different, that it would have been difficult for these women to have brought charges at the time. My recollection is that some of them tried and were shot down.

It may very well be true, which says much abut the times then, remember, newsprint ruled then, so if it didn't make page 1, it basically was forgotten. Now though, even when splashed all over the web, things are forgotten in 3 days. Remember last Thursday night? And that all seems to have evaporated and we move on to the next crisis... Justice is not a thing you can find any more, either the courts are corrupt, or the backroom people step in. Even now, the Cosby thing is a lot smaller than last week. It will totally gone in another. Doesn't mean anything about whether it was true or not, I do not believe truth matters any more, which is exactly as Ayn predicted.
