Since the release of “Atlas Shrugged: Who is John Galt?”, many of you have asked “what’s happening with Galt’s Gulch? Is Galt’s Gulch going away?”

With over 18,000 registered members, Galt’s Gulch Online is now the world’s largest and most active online Objectivist community. And, we're not going anywhere.

We are however going to be undergoing some renovations here in the Gulch and we want your feedback.

1.) What do you like most about Galt’s Gulch?
2.) What do you like least about Galt’s Gulch?
3.) What new features would you like to see?

It's not the end... it's the beginning.

I like most: the high level of objectivity and good sense from most people posting. I'm glad we haven't attracted many of the kind of hotheads found on certain "patriot" boards.

I also like the degree of "big tentedness" I see here. We're a diverse movement, and can't afford to drive people away needlessly. (Though I would want enough moderation so that "agents provocateur" don't show up and lead people into trying stupid things.)

I don't like having to reach 100 points before I can upvote others' posts. It sometimes leads me to post a new message instead, which many will see as a waste of bandwidth.

"People that disagree with you are not bullies."

Some are, some aren't. You can disagree with someone without automatically hitting the "troll" button on them. Maybe more should do that.

So, if one doesn't have the right purity of thought they are negative.

Seems to me that the group just can't tolerate another point of view.

Easily my favorite thing about Galt's Gulch is the emailed daily digest. I learn all sorts of things I, otherwise may not see elsewhere. +1

I am sure you have your reasons but it is frustrating that I cannot "Thumbs-up (or down)" someone's posting or comment. Maybe ease a little on the requirements?

I think it would be cool to be able to start groups. Like a local group, for instance. I would like to join a local group for lunch or coffee or go to Objectivist-themed events.

Like most: opportunity to learn from a large number of very knowledgeable, thoughtful and articulate people.
Like least: occasional vulgarity, ad hominem comments and initial discussions sometimes veering off on a nearly insignificant tangent.
Others have suggested a few interesting possibilities. I would not complain if it remained exactly unchanged. I subscribe also to: if it is not broken, don't fix it. Finally, I would also be willing to help insure that the Gulch is financially sound.

    Hi, B,
People that disagree with you are not bullies. If many people show you disagreement, perhaps it is time for you to rethink it and see if you learned something. The fact that a point of you is different, might, but does not necessarily add to its value. The point system is just a signal to quickly indicate disagreement. It does not force you to do anything.

I am most concerned about how to finish off my life in what I would say is an increasingly hostile world. Its seeming like the only way to defeat socialism is to let it crash, like Venezuela. Without that, it seems the great mass of people wont understand how evil socialism really is. We all need to live Ok in these turbulent times, with practical suggestions on how to minimize the effects of socialism on our lives.

Credit where credit is due. You did a great job, you could totally sell this platform, it's really nice.

I really like the site as is for the most part.

I'd propose some slight alterations in the categories for new posts.

I'd put Entertainment in with News or Culture - I rarely see anyone post anything to this one at all.

    I'd combine Government and Legislation.

I'd also like to see a section for trending conversations on the right to replace the Top Points Earners (always the same people - BORING) and the "Members and Lurkers" (move somewhere else) sections.

In general, I prefer the Gulch to any of the other online forums I participate in - primarily because the people are generally more polite and thoughtful. I think that counts as much as the design.

Maybe allow the users to select the color of the line they want. Myself, I prefer something a little more bold, like a red. I agree that the silver in use is difficult to see against a white background.

I think the movie is the last weeks of it's release and you'll have to await the DVD/Blu-ray to see it.

One who many would view as a political dinosaur all into the Constitution thinks Galt's Gulch is just great.
I got kicked off a political debate board that used to appear in my email for telling an atheist "God will get you for that" and making up the word, "Demonrat" for Democrat, all in the same post. I may have ended that with "I am dino, hear me roar," but I'm not sure.
I like to say that when I feel being uppity.

I checked this link and it appears to be a pretty standard blog format that I, personally, do not like. It's too hard to see the post hierarchy; I MUCH prefer the outline style on this site. I say, don't fix what ain't broke.

I want to see more discussions, specifically about philosophy and its application. That, more than movie news, is what I have found most valuable.

I agree; while I violently disagree with Robbie53024 on many subjects, I do not consider him a troll. Wrong, a lot, but not a troll.

Not sure if I agree with "a whole thread erupted after a comment by someone with _2_ points to their 'name'" being a problem. If someone has a valid point (or even an invalid one), causing "whole thread to erupt" is kind of the point of the blog in the first place, right? Making people think and then reply is a good thing, as long as the comments are in the spirit of and consistent with a discussion of Objectivism. Moderators can help ensure that the rules are followed by eliding spurious comments and ejecting posters who consistently violate the spirit of the blog.

Lose the weird points system. People post inanities to build up points. It doesn't stop trolls. It hampers discussion.

Also, hide the "x Members & y Lurkers Online" but make it optionally visible (open/close) as well. This would vastly increase the space for comments.

What do I like most: Different points of view.

What do I like least: Censorship by a few who gang up to dispense negative points to shut down different points of view.

Features: Get rid of the scoring system. It simply allows a few bullies to crush different views.

How's bout a Facebook presence reflecting this forum?

I agree. Let's make this sufficiently profit-making that it is worth the time and effort of the people responsible for it. Also, as a former Microsoft employee I have skills that I would be willing to contribute to help keep the site going.
