Hank Rearden's wedding ring in ASII

Is the same as mine :-)

A photo of mine is attached. I couldn't find an image of his, but you can see it in the scene where he is conspiring with Ken Danagger.

This is the first time I've seen one so similar to mine, which I designed for myself.

Thank heavens I'm not married to Lillian though, and hopefully my marriage will fare better than Hank's ;-)

this also sparks more conversation about wedding rings in general. newly wedded (for the first time at least) will pay a down payment on a house's worth or a trip around the world's worth, or even a sound start-up business's worth on "her" wedding ring. seriously, how did the ad men change our culture til that was the stupid outcome? On point, and this is anecdotal, most people I know who were into huge weddings and fancy A double S rings-kaput! silenced! are no more....

  I got married in a park outside a registry office. We invited nobody except for the mandatory two witnesses, whom we chose on the basis that they wouldn't care enough to make a fuss.
  
  I spent less than $500 on the reception, which I held in a scout hall :-)

I love the ring...it's simple and not flashy. I'm one of those who eloped and chose to have a tiny diamond ring. (The diamond is tiny..not the ring.) I'm anti-big wedding...seems imposing to expect others to show up and buy you gifts...but I'm odd when it comes to stuff like this (believe me, I know). Out of all of the happily married people that I know...almost all of us were elopers. (Not sure what that says really, probably nothing, just an interesting factoid...and has nothing to do with the topic of this post either... lol)
Is this ring on eBay?? The format was weird. Like a smart phone eBay app page or something... I said that like I even know what that means..."cell phone app". ????

  Something I've witnessed with disturbing frequency among people who are around 30-35 now, is that they have a huge fancy engagement party (gifts expected), and then break up within 12 months without ever getting married.
  
  And no, my wedding ring is not on eBay. I don't think I could expect a long and healthy life if it were ;-) Not sure what you mean about the format though... could it just be my bad photography?

      What I can't understand is how these people can have any self respect at all. In my view, putting on a big fanfare to announce that you *intend* to get married is somewhat questionable ipso facto, but then to nonchalantly break it off a few months later as though the whole thing was little more than a holiday fling is just pathetic.

        I think you're right about that. As long as I can remember, I have felt that way about invitations, without ever caring about it enough to actually think through it and make the explicit connection with obligation. But now you mention it, it seems blindingly obvious :-)

        lol It's Moochism. (UNLESS they specifically state that they don't want gifts only for you to come and share in their celebration of loooove.....and I'm skeptical of that even....cuz what schlub shows up for free food without a gift... lol Damned catch .22! I just avoid it all...)

        Yeah, I agree. I love a good party, which I see as a celebration of life anyway. If a friend is throwing a party, I'll likely come along if I can make it—for my own selfish enjoyment. So adding that it's a "celebration of love" seems confected in order to guilt people into coming who might not have wanted to come otherwise.

    actually, the picture is quite good-there is a slight reflection off the metal which is well done. it's the ads around it. I think they are different for depending on where we are-but it looks like an offering from eBay

      I promise I am not hocking my wedding ring ;-) I think I'd be reluctant to sell it even if I got divorced, because apart from its symbolic value, I'm also quite attached to it for its cosmetic appeal.         Cool! My initial wedding ring was beautiful, simple, but I loved it. It was wide, white gold w/a squared edge, and the center of the band was yellow gold vines going around. Being that I NEVER took off my rings, no matter if I was putting up wainscoting, digging up shrubbery, or painting canvas or walls, the center gold band came loose, started to spin around in the cavity in the center of the white gold band, and was fairly wrecked. I got a new one for my 15th anniversary a few years ago, but it's not the same. :-(

        Sounds like a beautiful ring. Unfortunately the more ornate ones tend to be less durable, and gold is so soft that even plain rings wear pretty fast. The satin finish is almost completely gone from mine after only four years, and I spend most of my time sitting at a desk.

  I tried hard to not have a big deal. what ended up happening was the marriage at one family's house, a celebration on the other side (simple small in a house) and then a party for friends in St. Charles MO on the river, I worded at a little english restaurant in the summer before finishing my degree. That was a blast. hey, maybe it's still there and uncommon has been to it-I'm checking-

    here are some pics. apparently, it is now a shop instead of a restaurant. but it was a lovely OLD building to have a wedding party -out back with little lights in the trees overlooking the St Charles River-you could almost see the steamboats on the water-there was no gambling yet in 1985 :)

        is that you in the wedding picture? I've been to the Grand Hotel once. I always wanted to go there since I saw Somewhere in Time. We went when Kira was only 2 weeks old. she was not sleeping at night :( but it was beautiful. I have a very close friend who lives in Cheyboygan. I've spent some wonderful summer vaycays in the LP and UP

        This is where I got married. My cousin baked my wedding cake, I did all of my flowers, because I didn't trust anyone else, and it was nice. And Pittsburgh is a great place to get married. I miss it!

        It depends on which part of the country you're in. The National Cathedral is in DC. its quite large, and its beautiful, but the chapel I was married in is like a lovely jewel box. It's also non-denominational. The only requirement to get married there is an affiliation with the Univ. of Pittsburgh. My mom went there, so I was able to get married there.

        At the beginning of the book it talks about the author and how he came to write the book...very interesting. He's written lots of books, this is the only one I've read. :(

        Hi LS, that was one of the few books I read more than once. He really captured the essence of the time period, and the absolute treachery and conniving employed by the church. I read it when it was first published and recommended it many times over the years.

        I'm in Australia, but those photos are from Europe. The first one is Merano in northern Italy, near the border of Austria. The second is Goslar, in the Harz Mountains in central Germany. And the third is Sans Souci Palace in Potsdam, near Berlin.

        I'm in Canberra, so yeah, around 12-14 hours drive from McLaren Vale :-)
        I have been to McLaren Vale a few times though and it is a very beautiful area. I have some friends that live in Aldinga, which is very nearby.

        Yeah, I've not been to Hiddensee, but I've stayed on neighbouring Rügen Island, which is very pretty. And funny you mention the weather, as that was in fact what messed up my plans to go to Hiddensee.

        That to me is just too romantic! We had a vintage Rolls for just the two of us. No limo. I didn't have an engagement party. it was too Long Island, which is where my husband is from. Just a small shower with a couple of close friends and my favorite Aunts. We splurged on our honeymoon, though. It was the last for a while back then.

        No shower, no gifts, no guests (well that's a lie...we had 2 couples go with us, but that was it.) It was beautiful yet very low key. And it was in the Fall so the island tourists were few...chilly day with gorgeous leaves...and did I mention HORSES? (It's where Somewhere in Time was filmed.) A vintage Rolls....wahhow!

        It is not expensive to get married there. We omitted NY right off, and the Northern VA/DC area as well. Plus my dad's family and some of my mom's were still in PA. Older, etc.
