Politicians look to separate Chicago from Illinois to create 51st state

I can think of a few others cities that should be made into their own states.
1. New York City
2. Los Angles,
3. San Francisco
4. Denver
The states they currently bully about can use a rest from their hijacking all the state revenue and pass all the stupid laws.

"So we devolve from nations back to city-states?"
I meant with with limitations on travel and with the protections of the Constitution, but I suspect that's a dream. I don't think it would necessarily be a step backward. I think the concept of the nation state will disappear soon, and I'd hate to see the world totally homogenize.

"The problem with giving the cities the government they want is that it would give all of us the government they want."
But in my fanciful idea, people would be free to locate elsewhere. They wouldn't be getting money from the taxes we send in on high-tech, automation, medical inventions, and entertainment. We wouldn't be getting money from their mills, farms, mines, and tourism. They could spend it on teaching kids to read with Bible tracts, and as long as they didn't out-and-out establish an official religion, it would be none of our business, just as how we run things would be none of their business.

I would go in the reverse direction. The non-federal properties in the District of Columbia should be absorbed into Maryland as an ordinary city. Puerto Rico and the other US territorial islands in the Caribbean area really should be the 51st State.

No, just make one “City State” (Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Boston, etc). Two senators and a few representatives for it. Separate these anomalies from normal states.

We can call it “Utourbia” (utopian-urban). What an awesome change that would make!!!

    Interesting idea.
Not that the dems will agree with what I am about to say, BUT, if they did, all that has to happen is that entry into the USA as an asylum victim either is denied until their case is heard and asylum is granted, or is forever barred if they come in illegally. We have enough legal immigrants here and we certainly dont need any illegal ones, no matter what "race" or "culture" they come from.

The list of metro areas could be longer. The problem is this would be "packing" the Senate in favor of socializing America. Each city would have two Senate seats added to their already corrupted House seats. Perhaps an unintended consequence.

I would vote for Eastern Washington to become the 51st State of Liberty.

I keep thinking that a solution to building a wall across the southern border is to make it a mostly "free" trade zone with no income taxation whatsoever as long as the individuals and companies who settle there build and maintain a wall to keep out invaders and illegals, and hire legal Americans instead of hiring Mexicans or illegals, or sending jobs overseas.

All but a few large cities voted for Clinton, many in Red states whose electoral votes all went to Trump. Taken to the logical conclusion, Trump would have lost all those city electoral votes, too. More than half of FL, MI, PA, and TX would have gone to Hitlery if the cities had been separate states, and they would have had 2 extra votes each from being separate states. Hitlery would be president under that scheme and the senate would be under Democrat control. It would also be rational for candidates to ignore rural areas when campaigning because the cities would have gained so many valuable electoral votes. The flyover areas would have lost what little political influence they had. Just the opposite of what the founders wanted, as usual.

Not necessarily. In 2016 Illinois' 20 electoral votes all went to Clinton. If Cook County were its own state, its (about 10) electoral votes would have gone to Clinton and the (about 12) electoral votes of the rest of the state would have gone to Trump. So Trump would have been +2 instead of -20 in Illinois.

Its time for a real revolution like a BREXIT- right here in the USA. Let the country be free of states or cities that dont want to be in the union anymore- let them float free without paying into the federal government.

Sure. And without their federal monies coming in, they'll quickly fall apart. I like it!

My worry is that we can't hold to this level of divisiveness too much longer. Something is going to have to give. Like the buildup right before an earthquake. My fear is that the earthquake will occur and shatter the lives of right and left together.

But you will be gaining back all the rural counties who vote Republican. In effect it will be actually a gain for Republicans - not a loss.

And pretty universally cities are Democratic strongholds and very poorly run.

It just goes to show that with politicians, there are lunatics on both sides of the aisle!
So, let’s do this right after we eliminate the Electoral College, tear down the Wall and give illegal aliens the vote, tax the rich at 52%, give Medicare to everyone, give free college to everyone, give free surgery to anyone who believes he or she is a German Shepherd trapped in a human body………and find out where Obama’s academic records and true birth certificates were hidden………Oh yeah, and eliminate climate change.

It would be better if cities with populations in excess of 1 million were declared 'Terra Incognita'. These megatropolises would forfeit their all but two of their representatives. And their votes would be excluded from the US Senate races. They would become 'protectorates' of the United States, but would forfeit all other benefits other than Humanitarian Aid from a natural disaster.

How about making the big urban centers protectorates? That way they have no voting representation in Congress, but more freedom in deciding their own rules within the city.

What??? Democrats gerrymander voting districts to keep themselves in power? What will you try and convince of us next? Fire is hot? Grass is green?

Great point about the electoral college. Known as a true blue state but it is one main county voting blue and almost every other county voting red. Illinois has many Democrat state and national representatives. This is because the Democratic party has shrewdly manipulated voting districts to negate many red voting blocks. The Illinois voting blocks look like a jigsaw puzzle on a map.
