In March of 1993, The United States Supreme Court issued a ruling in Reno v Flores. (Yes, “That” Reno. Janet Reno, Bill Clinton’s first Attorney General who ordered that young Elian Gonzalez be torn from his family’s arms while hiding in a Miami closet. You might remember the iconic photograph.)
The Court in Reno v Flores decided that minors could not be incarcerated with the adults accompanying them across the United States border illegally. The decision was the result of a long dispute in how to best care for these children while the adults were detained for criminal proceedings.
As a result, The Flores case drew a line in the sand. Children could not be incarcerated with their parents or accompanying adult while being held for illegal immigration violations. And a subsequent 1997 agreement stipulated that children must be placed in a safer environment where they could enjoy certain privileges, including education, a clean, safe environment and other normal life cycle amenities that incarcerated individuals do not enjoy.
It was considered a “victory” for human rights. By separating adult and child, we protected the children, reducing any harm done to them for their parent’s or accompanying adult’s decisions

We need immigrants as workers, as a means of correcting our age demographics and maintaining a vibrant society. I am indifferent as to their color, religious beliefs or politics as long as their wellbeing depends on assimilation. I am leery of Islamic extremism like everyone else but neither do I like extreme views from other sects. I was born and raised in a coal mining town where the company sent recruiters all over the world to get workers. We had Russians, Italians, Poles, Slavs, Hispanics and many blacks from the south. Everyone had their beliefs, traditions and a bias for their own people but everyone ultimately wanted to be an American and to be just like everyone else. Not everyone was treated the same and there were problems but they never got out of control and got noticeably better over time.
Criminals and terrorists are unwelcome but people that want to be here should have a way of coming here and making a new life for themselves. Our immigration laws are politicized mélanges that have been polluted over time by all parties and they need to be fixed. Every immigrant has difficulty with these laws and can get on the wrong side of a law and be deported. College students, workers that temporarily lose their employment, family members that visit and can't bear to go back are not criminals. Our do-nothing, polarized politicians need to fix this or it will continue to get worse. People need to be able to apply to come to the US, be given a reasonable time table and have an orderly process of entry. All the media wants to do is fan the flames to get more clicks or their equivalent.
