In every cultural background there are sayings that we are familiar with. Some are rarer than others. Some, we grew up with and are as familiar as your mother's voice calling on the phone, at the most inconvenient time.In the following, I have put together some of both kinds. Running down the actual authors are often a chore and often a surprise. Most of the following have been translated from the Hebrew and in some cases Yiddish. How many of your background can you present to us? Sometimes the authors of the following are surprising.

First we make our choices, then our choices make us. -- Ann Frank

If you don't believe in miracles, you're not a realist. -- David Ben Gurion

There is no such thing as a small act, there are only small people.-- Unknown

A person should be willing to give up all his tomorrows for one today, so that he doesn't wind up wasting all his todays on one tomorrow. A. Nony Mous

There are two ways to live. You can live as if nothing is a miracle. You can live as if everything is a miracle. -- Albert Einstein

When we are no longer able to change a siruation, we are challenged to change ourselves. -- Viktor Frankl

Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.
-- Albert Einstein

Pain is a reality, sufferingis a choice.
-- Asher Resnik-

Who is a wise person? It is the one who foresees the consequences. -- The Talmud

It is not how much or how little you have that makes you great or small, but how much you accomplish with what you have.
-- Samson Raphael Hirsch

Our biggest fear in life is whether or not we are living up to our potential. -- Ephriam Shore

Everyone in Congress should serve 2 terms. One in office followed by one in Prison - Mark Twain

If you don't read the news, you are uninformed, if you do, you are misinformed - Mark Twain

He was speaking about the corruption of our institutions like a Century ago!
    It has only gotten worse.

    Every day make something better!
Good things come to those who Work!

I work because it affords me 2 luxuries I have grown accustomed to:
    - Living in doors
    - Food

Be wrong out loud... You learn faster!

I did not realize that Mark Twain offered the 2 term solution to serving. I have been stating that for years thinking I had invented it, I must have learned from him.

Marcus Aurelius is not often quoted, but here are some his quotes that I like:

The best revenge is to be unlike him who performed the injury.

Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one.

It is not death a man should fear. He should fear never beginning to live.

Our life is what our thoughts make it.

If you want things in your life to change, you have to change things in your life.

"It is often that a persons mouth breaks his nose"

"It is not the tragedy that defines you , it is how you respond that does"

"May you have the hindsight to know where you’ve been, the foresight to know where you are going, and the insight to know when you have gone too far."

"May the roof above you never fall in and those gathered beneath it never fall out."

"Lose an hour in the morning, and you’ll be looking for it all day"

It depends on whom you regard as a member of your tribe.

Computer programming is tremendous fun. Like music, it is a skill that derives from an unknown blend of innate talent and constant practice. Like drawing, it can be shaped to a variety of ends – commercial, artistic, and pure entertainment. Programmers have a well-deserved reputation for working long hours, but are rarely credited with being driven by creative fevers. Programmers talk about software development on weekends, vacations, and over meals not because they lack imagination, but because their imagination reveals worlds that others cannot see.

"In the 20th century, the United States endured two world wars and other traumatic and expensive military conflicts; the Depression; a dozen or so recessions and financial panics; oil shocks; a flu epidemic; and the resignation of a disgraced president. Yet the Dow rose from 66 to 11,497." Warren Buffet

Herb 7734, Just to be clear, Mr. Crockett's hat was made from a Racoon. That's why it's called a coon skin hat. The tail on the hat was fluffy and stripped, not flat and hairless. Just saying.......

      NOT POLITICALLY CORRECT!!!
Besides, I wouldn't know a raccoon from an Opossum, from a prairie dog..However, I'm pretty good at dog breeds. I have owned a number of beagles in my life and own one now. Next to my wife and children, she is my favorite relative.
