I no longer understand where society is headed

In the past few days I have heard a couple stories that really leave me wondering where our society is headed. The first was of the young woman who was shot and killed by an illegal, repeat-offender felon while walking with her dad in San Francisco. The court is bending over backward to set the guy free. I think they succeeded. The arguments for turning him loose could only be fabricated by an insane person. Then...there was the story of the young autistic teenager kidnapped and tortured by a few "youth". They were so proud of the torture that they aired it in social media. The judge refused to give them any time stating that they probably wouldn't get out any better. No time. They get to walk.

Can somebody make any sense of this? I think it seems like some strange war against decency by militant leftists. It's all so hard to believe, anymore...

I can explain it. The date is 1792 and the place is Paris, France. The États généraux has been shut down and replaced by a more constitutional body. 1793 follows where all political discussion is resolved by the guillotine.

A standby jurist, who sat with the jury but did not vote, was interviewed on Fox. He argued that the jury reached the only decision it could because they did not know all the facts about the murderer and/or were told they had to ignore them, and because of the narrow technical legal formulations of the prosecution. He seemed to be satisfied with the decision. There appears to be a mixture of incompetence and false standards across the board in this case. Atlas is shrugging/being murdered.

Kate Steinle was murdered in San Fran Sicko, Kalifornia, the city and the state explaining to me why bleeding hearts want to make nice to a Hispanic illegal repeat offender felon.
Did the kidnap torture take place in Chicago? If so, the autistic teenage is white and his sadistic tormentors are black. Maybe the judge is black.
Me dino recalls how O, when he was the not so great yet powerful, pardoned several black convicted felons because he felt his race gets picked on.
Are these two cases~well, three, including the former Racist-In-Chief's skin pigment pardons~indicative where society is headed?
Maybe not. Still, we could still be going down the tubes anyway. For one thing, is the swamp really gonna get drained? Or will it drown us?

Legal minds operate in a delusional, classroom environment, rather than the reality the rest of us dwell in. This approach is instilled in them to get them to approach legal issues dispassionately. The theory is that this is the only way to avoid a society too ready to "burn the witch!"

The downside (and it's often a big one) is that the jurists begin to approach each case before them as a challenge to see if they've exhausted all conceivable arguments in favor of the defendant. The obsession with "beyond all reasonable doubt" is more important to many jurists than justice for the victim.

One restriction that should be removed is the omission of a defendant's criminal history, treating each offense in isolation. The intent is not to color the jury's opinion by painting the defendant as likely guilty going in, but sometimes habitual violent felons avoid due punishment as a result.

Sometimes a decision is the fault of the prosecution, as was the result of the Steinle case. The prosecutors were so obsessed with getting justice for the Steinle family that they spent little time building a case for the alternative of involuntary manslaughter. Given that the victim's wound was a result of a ricochet, the manslaughter should have been easy to prove, but the obvious exaggerated stretch to first degree murder undermined any credibility, given that the jury was unaware of the defendant's past history.

Re your second paragraph - that is true UNLESS the gov't sees you as a tax protester or a second amendment advocate or other anti gov't person. Then it is the opposite and you are guilty before th trial starts. With this exception, I agree whole heartedly with everything you say!

I've long felt like I was stranger in my own country. It's almost as if everything we have held dear has be set aside in favor of those things we loathe, like someone is pushing us to see how far it can be taken before we explode. The fact that this illegal literally got away with murder of an American citizens is appalling, but sadly nothing new; it happens everyday with/without the spotlight of a court case and national media.

I question whether we can right this ship.

I often find myself saying out loud, "At what point does somebody stand up and start kicking ass?" If that tortured kid was my son's tormentors they wouldn't get off free...if you know what I mean.

I admit it makes me want to get more isolated... And, more and more, I am entertaining establishing a place in another country.

I believe the election of Trump was the last gasp of a dying country. Trump, regardless of what people think personally of him, appealed to a segment of the country that did not like the road we were going down. Unfortunately, with the one-sided press, the resistance groups, and now all the sexual harassment stuff going on the future looks bleak. I think we are headed down the path to socialism. Rand said that she saw nothing but destruction ahead for the United States... unfortunately, she was right!

We are witnessing the rise of the clan of Ellsworth Toohey. To understand the media and universities read the speech the character makes to Peter toward the end of Fountainhead. The degeneration has been going on for a long time. Little Ellsworth clones are running media, universities and even many so called libertarian and conservative orgainzation. Tucker over at FEE is a good example of the bankruptcy. .

Agreed. The Forgotten Man says it all. This Man is a dying breed and Communism is winning. They have our schools and media in their pocket. The useful idiots are running the show. Our once great country will regress to the lowest common denominator in society and we will be sheep run by wolves. Probably more feudalism than anything else. And then, the masses will rise and history will repeat itself.

We live in a post rational world. When I retired from NASA I continued teaching; astronomy, physics, and computer programming. While I taught a couple of graduate level courses I also taught freshman physics. Each year the new students became increasingly difficult to accommodate as a growing number were functionally illiterate. What's more they could not accept the desirability of logical thinking. Feelings were more important than facts. Even the fundamental "laws" of physics were opinions and subject to negotiation. The final straw took place at the school library. I found a stack of books on critical thinking sitting in the trash awaiting their destiny with the book burners. I salvaged them and added them to my personal collection. I asked the librarian why these books were being thrown out. She said they were misogynistic, homophobic, and anti diversity and such writings had no place in an institute of higher learning. I confronted the board of regents at a faculty meeting and got much the same answer. It was clear that the real objective was to teach what to think as opposed to how to think. I concluded that there was no place for me in such an institution and the board agreed. We parted ways. The most insidious form of destruction of a civilization is decay from within. It can begin with the education system and from there it metastasizes to the news and education media and ultimately to the courts. We are witnessing the death throws of a republic and it is of little consolation that it lasted over one hundred yeas longer than the founders thought it would.

Thinking has no place in an institute of higher learning? Because critical thinking is critical of emoting as a source of knowledge and behavior? What kind of a school was that and what goes on in the physics department? Who was trying to negotiate the laws of physics, transforming them into what?

I know it's odd but there are people that think physical laws are dreamed up by a bunch of people and then enforced arbitrarily. I put them in the same class as Flat Earthers.

Did you encounter that with the students taking physics? What were the students trying to "negotiate"?

Mostly other faculty members. There were a few students that echoed that idea however. I had a humorous event when I offered a class "Introduction to modern astronomy". There were over 300 requests when we expected maybe 30 for the class and we had to move it to a theater type classroom. Most of the students dropped the class they realized it was about astronomy rather than astrology. Oh well.

Acceptance of liberal dogma and diversity of sexual orientation, skin color, and ethnicity are ok while diversity of thought is forbidden. According to many of my students and some faculty members (non scientists) physical laws (such as gravity and conservation of momentum) are too restrictive and need to be adjusted to respond to societal norms. While this is absurd on its face it reflects the thinking in many of our universities today.

There is some sort of emotional attraction to collectivism which seems to be pervasive. It is at the root of this dysfunction. I would love to know WHY collectivism, socialism, fascism etc is so attractive that people put up with it....

It is because we humans are a social creature. It helped us evolutionarily to survive. Socialism plays on this aspect of our nature. It causes the have-nots to believe it is a way to level the field to allow all to experience wealth by redistributing it to all. The problem is we humans are never satisfied with enough and always want more. This is the flaw in socialism because it doesn't elevate anyone, it just drags everyone down to the lowest level and then no one can move up. Because when you try, you are targeted and punished (by the others coming to take your wealth). Eventually, no one wants to try to better themselves because there is no reward for it. So society stagnated and dies.

Why do people seem continually attracted to socialism when there is irrefutable and constant evidence it doesn’t work? Just look at venezuela

Based on my experience, it is the parasite that is attracted to socialism. One of my neighbors made the remark recently, regarding an increased tax "Well, the State really needs that money." I had no rebuttal -- essentially, I don't speak that language, and I was a bit taken aback at the brazenness of the statement. But what she was really saying is this:
          1. My State teacher's pension needs that money.
          2. My husband's Social Security Disability needs that money.
          3. My deadbeat kid on Obamacare "free health care" needs that money.
When you find someone that is attracted to socialism, know that you are looking at a parasite that is profiting from it -- the taking of property from one class of citizens and giving it to others... and they are on the receiving end of the transaction. It is open parasitism; endorsed with the general approval of their own conscience.

Exactly ! The quickest and easiest way to test for this parasitical tendency is to find out if they voted for Hillary in 2016. If yes, they are to be avoided and considered sn enemy

I just saw a perfect answer by Steven Crowder. He said 'As long as the rich are in a minority, and the poorer majority believe that they will benefit from stealing the rich's wealth, there will always be democratic socialism (which is just the current version or name that socialism is being called now). Because having to work to earn a living or being lazy and collecting a check for doing nothing doesn't require much investigation to understand why the latter is the overwhelming answer. But socialism is a turd, wrapped up in a beautiful package, because most people don't look beyond their personal situation to realize that when no one is being productive, there is no money to redistribute. And who wants to be productive if you are just going to be robbed of your efforts?

So whats the answer? The productive rich people should just refuse to give $$ to the unproductive masses? Our problem is that the third parties (government agencies) pull out the guns and force us to "contribute", and "democracy" gives the unproductive masses the powers of the government. Not sure how we can fix this, cause its so pervasive.

I was almost certain that you were going to say that robots were the answer. Government can give every person a robot at birth (funding by debt, of course) and the robot can do the work to provide for the lazy and to pay off the debt. Fiat, Fiat, Fiat!
Only problem is that there is nothing in this for the looters. ;^)

They will tax the robot with a special "robotax" upon purchase, and then a "robousage" tax for every hour that it works.

Maybe the government will put robo-socialism on us, whereby the government buys and owns the robots, and has them work for IT. That way the rich productive people dont have to provide the money for the government to give away to the unwashed.

Your explanation reminds me of an example of socialism I heard 10 or 20 years ago: Lets say you are a school teacher, the first day of class you explain to them that like socialism, you are going to average out the grade each person gets on each test and that is the grade each person gets on the test. For each test you have 3 types of people; the ones that study their butts off, the ones that do just enough to get by, and last the people that could care less. The first test comes along and the average grade is a "C". The first type of people complain that they got 100% right but only got a "C". The second group says they got pretty much what they deserved. The last group says "This is great!!! I didn't even have to work for the "C"". Pretty soon everyone starts doing less and by the end of the semester they are all failing.

Best example of socialism because even the third group can understand it even though they will do nothing to correct it...

HMM. maybe you hit it on the head. Most animals dont produce anything, just use what they can take. The liberals have the ability to produce things, but are too lazy to actually do that. Instead they want to take whatever is there, like the "other" animals. Insteresting

Animals don’t reason and produce anything. Humans can think and reason IF they want to- separating themselves from lower animals and allowing them to change their environment to rnhance their lives. If one chooses not to think and reason, the only option is to simply take what is out there that is created by otgerd

The worst problem created by critical thinking is that when a conclusion is reached then a decision must be made based on understanding of the nature of reality. Most often if good results are desired this automatically directs the individual to the fact that he must now act (work) to make it happen. Faced with that choice most people prefer to make life work by enforcing work onto others and pilfering from them. This requires either accepting the fact that the individual is either immoral (which they don't want to do) or that they re-evaluate their criteria or rework the argument until they can accept that A is not A but B and it is not their fault.

We are headed down the rabbit hole, and both Dems and Republican establishment are leading the way. I became worried years ago when Kissinger said if they could control oil, food and banks, they could accomplish one world governent in two years. Did not happen, so then turned to brainwashing in the public schools and setting race against race. With Hillary and Obama having years to push the Alinsky model, they are making the society over into a Marxist/communist society by playing on the stupidity of society. We are headed for a dumbed down, one-world, land of sheeple, with the elite few running the show. Why, because people have allowed themselves to be stupid and uninformed, while inferiors like Obama scheme with Soros and his money, to destroy our society.

I don't know if they are "leftists" so much as unwitting anarchists. Of course, collapsing society first then rebuilding in a totalitarian (socialist based) model may be the long term plan -- or the natural and logical consequences.

First off, I'm not sure there is a much better country, but I could be wrong. For years I have been saying I expect a three fold revolution. A political one ( it began in Ma. with the election of Scott Brown ) which only lasted until Elizabeth Warren bought the seat and now with Trump. Second a Financial one with wealthy people moving their cash and refusing to pay taxes. Lastly a violent one which nobody would want.
I only wish the courts would apply the laws of the land and put these felons away for good.

Big Squaw Running Mouth didn't buy the seat any more than any other politician. She ran as a progressive in Massachusetts. Massachusetts was the only state to go for McGovern in 1972. It's worse now. Brown had been a state legislator running against a Hilary-like hack (her campaign ads even misspelled "Massachusettes") with an entitlement to power mentality at a time when there was a surge of resentment against Democrat abuse over Obamacare. It didn't last. Now they've bought the premise and don't want repeal.

The wealthy aren't refusing to pay taxes. They minimize them as they always do, with a few moving to different states when there is an extreme difference. A lot of "liberals" don't like what they are getting and leave for other states to vote with the same bad premises elsewhere.

The violent left is a more open resurgence of antics of the New Left of the 1960s and 70s that never entirely went away. It does appear to be getting worse.

The general loss of Empathy is startling.

I often feel like we need a punishment whereby the person is given a drug that prevents them from using their arms for a period of MONTHS. Requiring them to have someone Feed/help them. Make them live in helplessness, maybe to develop some Empathy.

But as you noted... There is no justice. This would be considered TOO CRUEL (by people with questionable Empathy values)... And here we go.

Can someone BUILD the Gulch already. My bags are packed, I am ready to go!

I understand it, and quite frankly it terrifies me. It is Atlas Shrugged - a society which has abandoned the principles of liberty and free markets and is moving toward a socialist hell while the other socialist nations are falling like dominoes economically. Pretty soon, the whole world is going to collapse and we're going to see a world-wide calamity that will dwarf WW II. I earnestly hope I'm wrong.
