I want to start a Gulch!

The dollar has at most a couple years left. It could crash at any time. The government is over-reaching in uncountably many ways - from spying on Americans to killing Americans without due process to waging incessant wars for the sole reason of enriching the elites.

I want out. I no longer want to help keep Leviathan afloat.

Think about it: How do we form "gulches"? How can we separate ourselves from the flotsam of society? How do we guarantee that only the productive and like-minded move in and how do we defend ourselves from a state gone rogue?

Most of the answers here seem to focus on how to "hide" from Leviathan. I was thinking more along the lines of organizing a group of like-minded people and organizing in such a way that we tell Leviathan to shove it where the sun don't shine. The Free State project is a step in that direction - but from some of the videos I've seen of the practitioners, it seems to be more about poking and antagonizing Leviathan than evading, outsmarting and ultimately killing Leviathan (or allowing it to die of its own inefficiencies.) I'm thinking along the lines of the FLDS operation (but without the religion and the inbreeding). A compound/town/city that produces enough for people to live comfortably, but which bars law enforcement and government crap from outside. Well, something along those lines.

I don't kniow, but I'm in. Have given a lot of thought to 'what went wrong" with the founding fathers' plans, and how it might be done better.

I am always polite to anyone that does a service job. When I read this book it made me feel good that I don't think less of people based on their work. Just base it on the way they act.

Best way is to hide in plain sight, much as the characters did in the book. Use your degree and skills, whatever they may be, for your own pleasure and take a job flipping burgers or emptying dumpsters. Learn about the underground economy and if you can make money that way....do it. Rural areas are especially good places to move to, take a commonplace job, and quickly cease to be noticed. Small towns are full of gossips, and people will know you on sight everywhere. But if they know you as "Joe the garbage man", rarely will you get a second glance.

Do not stand out. Move with the herd as much as you can without sacrificing yourself. Leave the bumper stickers off your car (a dark colored four door sedan) and don't put political signs in your yard.

Like others have said , first hide in plain sight, second begin to help each other by finding out what goods and services we can offer to each other and promote us within our circles of influence. Then find the state that has the strength and stones to be free ( Texas still has good stock) find the land or an appropriate town and start relocating the businesses there. Once started enlighten the looters to the wisdom of staying away. Most importantly , always continue to learn to be self sufficient.

Virtual economy, through services like Paypal would be part of it, I think. Bartering. Networking. Don't draw attention to yourself, but do what you can to be self-reliant. We talk about having a "Gray Market" economy, one where it is not part of the Federal system, but isn't doing anything illegal, just moving resources around creatively.

We vote with the jobs we accept and what we choose to spend our money on. Though these steps do not seem radical, we can slow develope the kind of gulch we would like to live in.

There's a lot to be said for owning a home and enough real estate for a garden and perhaps some chickens, sheep, even a cow if you can manage it. But it's also very easy to be invisible in an apartment. People in apartments form walls around themselves due to the lack of privacy. Again, everyone "knows everyone on sight", but few if any will pay attention to you unless you are visible doing something "interesting".

Shop at rummage sales and do not use credit cards wherever possible. Have your own rummage sale as a way of making some extra money. If you need to turn some gold and silver into paper dollars now and then, go to a pawn shop. They make their living by not asking questions.

Learn survival skills and outright basic skills. See Robert Heinlein: “A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.” It's a good list--add to it as need be,

Convert savings into precious metals (if you don't have savings, learn to live cheaply and create the--there are abundant practical guides) and durable goods and sock them away securely. Knives, tools, guns, ammunition, camp stoves/lanterns and fuel, blankets, extra clothing, good shoes--all will be worth having if the time comes when you can't buy them, assuming you can't make your own. Read and learn from a few books on basic skills and "survival" (see Robert Heinlein's list of "a man should be able to:" for a great list of basic skills that will take you almost anywhere.
