‎"He didn't invent smelting and chemistry and air compression. He couldn't have invented his Metal but for thousands and thousands of other people. His Metal! Why does he think it's his? Why does he think it's his invention? Everybody uses the work of everybody else. Nobody ever invents anything." - James Taggart

Ayn Rand specifically stated patents and copyrights are the legal implimentation of the base of all property rights: a man's right to the product of his mind.
The first patent issued in the US was a "method" patent. Hopkins invented a method for making pot ash. Every invention is a combination of known elements. It is not efficient, nor productive and certainly not brilliant to "reproduce" software that already exists.
Some in the Gulch are clearly not interested in what Ayn Rand or Objectivism had to say.

Thank you for posting this quote. Right now, open source, free software communities pretending to be capitalists are destroying property rights. Von Mises Group thinks patents are monopolies. Utter nonsense. For a real life Atlas Shrugged horror story, google Edwin Armstrong vs. RCA. Armstrong killed himself on Thanksgiving. We will not give in to despair becasue we have this community, but as Galileo once said: " Invention theft is worse than murder." We all need to stuff that in our turkeys.

What a bunch of rot. Open source does not destroy property rights; open source DEPENDS on property rights.

Please go read _The Cathedral And The Bazaar_ by Eric S. Raymond.

Open source community has not respected copyrights, patents or trademarks. While it is true, technically, that the concept of open source is not inherently anti property rights, its proponents have in the large majority have been against any property rights.

I'm sorry, khalling, but that is a flat-out lie. Not only does the Open Source movement respect all three, their track record at doing so is better than that of closed-source developers.

Now please go read Eric S. Raymond.

This is just not true. See opensource.com "Should patents be abolished" You clearly have no idea what you are talking about. You are either liar or incredibly ignorant.

First of all, you're lying. The article on open source.com does NOT ask whether patents should be abolished.

It asks whether SOFTWARE patents should be abolished.

The answer is: yes, software patents should be abolished. The USPTO opened a huge Pandora's box when it started issuing patents for something that is unpatentable. And we have a real mess on our hands because of it.

I have been involved in the Open Source movement for decades, and if I were using my real name here you could Google me and find out just how much I DO know about what I say.

I am neither a liar nor ignorant, but YOU are a troll.

Now put your money where your mouth is. Name ONE open source project that has violated ANYONE'S copyright, patent or trademark.

              Go ahead, I'm waiting.

You are a troll. Red Hat lost a patent lawsuit FireStar S/W - YOU CLEARLY HAVE NO INTEREST IN THE TRUTH.

THe paper you mention says nothing about property rights. Linux was just a rehash of UNIX - typical of opensource goons. They can't invent anything themselves so they recreate existing s/w and think they are brilliant

Firestar is the perfect example of a looter -- they patented a "method" (which is not supposed to be patentable) that was obvious, and had been in widespread use for decades before they obtained the patent.

Also, you are lying about yet another thing: Red Hat did not lose the lawsuit. They settled.

So Red Hat paid off a looter to make them go away. Shame on Red Hat.

If you can't argue rationally and intelligently, you have no place here.

P.S. Software companies lose lawsuits to patent trolls all the time. Red Hat isn't the first and won't be the last.

You asked for one and I found in ten seconds. I pointed you to a open source website which is talking about ending patents. You have yet to be right on a single point. But you continue to push your point without any facts on your side.

You have found absolutely nothing. Zero, zip, nada. I'm sorry, but lawsuits from patent trolls do not count.

And holding the opinion that SOFTWARE patents should be abolished (which they should) is not proof that anyone is trampling on anyone's rights.

Now let's see you take ownership of the several lies that I've already caught you in.
