From the article:
"A Friday letter signed by 469 students and professors objected to University of Virginia President Teresa Sullivan quoting the third U.S. president and Declaration of Independence author in a campus email because Jefferson owned slaves, The Cavalier Daily reported.

“I think that Jefferson is often celebrated for his accomplishments with little or no acknowledgement of the atrocities he committed against hundreds of human beings,” said Asst. Psychology Prof. Noelle Hurd, who drafted the letter."
Casting dispersions on one of the great minds of the revolutionary period even with all of his faults over 220 years later is a sad commentary on the academic level of the university system.
Examine the entire slave culture and assign blame where blame is due. Don't just pick a choose who you throw stones at because they are convenient.
For example, a little know fact is there are laws on the books in Massachusetts still permitting the holding of slaves. I know they have been obviated by federal laws etc, but they still should have been nullified by actions in that state.

A commonly quoted Objectivist phrase is "There can be no contradictions". Unfortunately, Jefferson had some contradictions in his life. Most humans do. To say that we cannot celebrate someone's accomplishments because of one regrettable thing in that person's life would basically mean that no human being's accomplishments could be celebrated.
