Transformers : Age of Extinction / Rated PG-13 for violence and scary images.
The Hasbro Transformers toy line has been around for 30 years. The new Transformers film set out to equal the record by making a 30 year long movie. This turned out to be impractical. They came as close as they dared. At 2 hours and 45 minutes this film suffers from a producer directors dilemma. After spending 165 million dollars of which it appears that 164 million was expended on special effects the team just couldn’t bring themselves to edit out anything that they had filmed. Too bad. This film could be shortened by a good hour and be far more effective.
Like the other films the special effects are incredibly detailed and imaginative. The problem is that more of the same only adds up to more of the same. The storyline is almost an afterthought. The big battles are center stage and they look terrific. In the end too many of them look exactly like the one we had seen about 20 minutes previously at any point in the film.
The prior cast are now no longer even mentioned. The new guys consist of Mark Wahlberg as a frustrated engineer inventor striving to keep his home in Texas although he hasn’t made a payment since the Hasbro Transformer toys premiered. He is also trying to cope with raising a teenage daughter that just wants to go out on a date with her boyfriend and get wasted with her girlfriends. Kelsey Grammar and Stanley Tucci add to the cast in supporting roles. They play the bad guy and the confused and duped inventor in the order they are mentioned.
Filmed primarily in Texas and Hong Kong the film looks and sounds terrific. The Real 3D didn’t add much but at least they now seem to be able to keep Real 3D in focus. This is a big plus. If it costs extra for the Real 3D and Imax you will probably be just as satisfied viewing the standard version. This film looks to be a big Summer Blockbuster. Since the running time seems to be about the same as the Summer season this could be a word of mouth loser and bring down the final box office result.
Transformers continues to come up with effects that are astounding. The detail is incredible. But basically this is all this film has to offer. Many will wait for the BluRay or DVD. At least then you can take breaks and even watch the film over a one week period.
Rated 2.6 out of 4.0 reasons I guess I will be at the next sequel which is rumored to have an intended running time of seven and a half hours.

Said intermission inserted so you could use the restroom and they could pry a second round of overpriced snacks and drinks out of you.
I'm surprised they haven't started doing intermissions again.
Movies are trending longer because people want more "value" for the ticket prices. And intermission would up the concessions stand take.
Value being a relative term, and especially rare coming out of hollywood.
