Software of Interest: Secure Browser, Alternate email client

Recently I've begun surveying some free and secure software solutions to cover some things I use regularly. My targets were my preferred browser (Opera) and my long time email client (MS Outlook 2007). Yes, Outlook 2007 is rather old but it suits my needs.

I ended up settling on these applications.

eM Mail - free and a paid option (which I'll probably make use of) http://www.emclient.com/

and for browsing Comodo Ice Dragon secure browser
https://icedragon.comodo.com/

eM did a fine job of importing all my email accounts from Outlook and then Thunderbird. Its different to use from MS but picking up those differences is pretty straight forward. The only negative I've found, and this is from any other non-ms program, is that there is no utility to receive MS Outlooks Notes. No a deal breaker for me, just an annoyance.

Ice Dragon (build from Firefox) flawlessly imported everything from Firefox. I had to convert my Opera favorites and bookmarks to a HTML file to have Ice Dragon accept probably 20 years of links and such.

I still use Opera 12.17 most of the time, AJA. My modern day browser that is gradually becoming my first choice is Vivaldi, which was started by one of the Opera designers/founders and has a lot of the features that I loved in Opera. Vivaldi imports Opera bookmarks file easily.
I never liked Outlook (never needed the complicated "features"), and stayed on Outlook Express until just over a year ago (running it as my only app in a VirtualBox XP machine.) I switched to Claws-Mail which is working fine for me (after a relatively minor learning period because Claws is designed to replace OE.)
Good luck with your new software choices ;^)

My latest frustration is a change by my hosting company from easy, fast, low bandwidth SquirrelMail webmail to a another "more modern, efficient" webmail install. It uses lots more bandwidth, lacks basic ease of use features for quick scanning new mail, and the spam filter is pathetic. Of course, they don't care because they feel it is a great improvement because it looks more like Yahoo mail. Yeccchhh!!! Lots of cute unintelligible icons that don't have the functions I want and displaying mail takes 5x longer than it did.
They say I should install my own version of squirrelmail and maintain it myself ... which also means I am forced to waste more of my time because of their bad decision. Probably time to look for a new hosting site.

Opera has served me well up to this point. When I started this game development company and project I found myself visiting youtube more an more to watch tutorials (never hurts to do for yourself when game artist/programmers are so flaky). Unlike Firefox and IE (both installed on my system) the quality of Opera's ability to show youtube video was sorely lacking, I couldn't read the video text on either of my monitors. Firefox was good but compared to Opera it was lacking in practical ways. Ice Dragon, so far, fits the bill and is compatible with Firefox plugins. Not bad.

I'll give Vivaldi a shot. If it does a better job that Opera on youtube videos and is still as customize-able I have no issue moving over.

Try eM, if it cost anything it would be worth it but its free and that makes it an outstanding find.

I have had problems with my old version of Opera displaying some web pages but no problems with playing youtube videos on it. Vivaldi does both perfectly. Its another of the Chrome based browsers I will look at eM;^).

I've been using Thunderbird for several years now. It's sometimes glitchy, but it's the only app I know of that has versions for both Linux and Windoze. Either OS can r/w my store.

The biggest pain with tBird is it's defaulting my email store onto the OS drive (C: or "sd__", I always keep all my data on Drive D:/ with ntfs format. I wish I were savvy enough to manage my Linux better, but guess I'm too old to make things stick!

IceDragon, at least one of its versions, is built on Firefox. So far I'm liking it a lot. A eM mail for $99 for a life of upgrades has proven to be smarter and a much lower footprint than Outlooks (it only lacks outlooks notes). I was a MS authorized re-seller at one point...just sayin' :)

I surfed for IceDragon, which sounds pretty good, but it's a browser, while I would like a email app which behaves better than Thunderbird at installation. I rehab older computers, so deal with repeated installations, all using Linux. There may be some way of creating a modified installation CD/DVD but that's beyond me. So guess I must just muddle on.
