OK GUlchers, help with a smartphone

I finally talked my wife into a smartphone to replace her aging, antique, flip phone (yes, it flips, and only talks, and takes pictures). Yet everywhere I look, I find disturbing references to some nasty desease a phone has (Like the MotoG4 has "Ghost Touch" when charging). Is there an inexpensive smartphone (she refuses to have an "expensive" one, probably because one of our horses will eat it or something) that just works? Any recommendations would be appreciated....

Many good, cheap phones out there. I use Cnet.com as a resource for most tech including phones. A good, cheap phone is available from MetroPCS called the Zmax Pro for like $99. It is from China or Taiwan but has good features but is locked into Metro's network for the length of the contract. I have a Droid Turbo on Verizon and love it but I don't think they sell it anymore, new tech coming out everyday.

I have a Motorola Droid 2 from Verizon Wireless. I don't use it anymore. Went with the unbreakable screen. It's yours for the cost of postage. It's only 3G but should solve your problem.

Thanks for the offer, I looked at them, apparently only Verizon can use them? Even the "unlocked" ones are ":Verizon only" online...found an article complaining about how good they are and crying about the Verizon bit...

Look at used android phones a couple years old. They will do anything she wants (and more), and will save a fortune compared to an i(diot)Phone from crApple. I think I paid about $50 for the last one I bought on Ebay. Just be sure that the one you buy can operate on the carrier (i.e., Verizon, ATT, Sprint, T-mobile etc) that she wants to use. Some phones are locked to the original carrier, but usually you can get an unlock code for a couple bucks on Ebay. I use an HTC Incredible 2 that originally came from Verizon and I unlocked it to use on ATT (via H2O wireless.) It is pretty old Android ver 2.3.4. There are lots of more current android smartphones at reasonable prices, and there are lots of free apps you can download for them.

Thanks freedom, I figured out the unlocked business. I have a Galaxy S4 on Sprint that Intel has us use in and out of the fab, and they allow personal use too, so I got set with that. I think I will use Sprint or hers as they have an employee discount and will supposedly cut the rate in half. Thanks for the reply. Also, B&H Photo has a neat download with all the carriers and what is needed for them, so you can match the phone specs to the carrier to make sure it will work.

Friends have told me they really liked the Galaxy S4. Is it more complex than she needs for her first smart phone?

No, the thing I have found is that anything not new design" is almost as expansive as a "new" one. It seems there is a happy medium at "sort of new". The S4 works, but all you can find are refurbs with 30 day warranty's, and the s5/s6 had a few issues. I knew a couple people who had s5/s6's (because we had the S4) and they dumped them. Seemed they would heat up and shut down. Intel looked at the S6 as an upgrade for us, and decided to wait until next year, as they did a pilot and had a 30% failure rate. It seems you either get a good phone that works (I have beat the crap out of mine (S4), and it has never died yet) or it blows up. Durability in a tiny design is not achieved yet, I guess.

I was a late adopter of cell phones, about 7 years ago. I only got one when I was going to live in Honduras, and that was the only choice for a phone there. IIRC, I have bought 4 phones in all, every one a used phone from ebay (or trademe, the NZ version of ebay.) Shopping for such on ebay can be time consuming however. Every phone has been reliable and I used each one about 2 years before deciding to "upgrade" for one reason or another. I used the site I sent to select each phone I bought (along with other online reviews to inform about any user problems.) I have had no problem with durability. The 3 I still have all still work. All of them are HTC brand phones.(1. HTC Touch Diamond, 2., HTC HD2, 3. HTC Incredible 2) One reason I chose them in particular is that they would work easily in the US and overseas with sim cards. Perhaps I have been lucky or I am less demanding with them than others. I get as much or more utility from mine for GPS, music playing, camera as for use as a phone. I am not one who has a constant addiction to my phone, and I think texts are a waste of time with very specific exceptions when talking is not an option.

Well, you do sum up my view, I will have to train my wife, as her current phone is a "phone" (flip). Has buttons, small screen, no smarts, and a camera. I think she will adapt, just need to get her to understand "data".

You can restrict the phone to not allow data if you wish. I never use cell data on my phone. Phones are just too small and slow for me to use for email and web browsing. I do use it on my wireless network infrequently to download free software, e.g., music player, gps updates. My laptop is a much better platform for use as a computer than any smartphone to date. But some people love to have an instant link to the internet as reference, entertainment, etc.
