Thank You to the Gulch

I'm quite frankly astounded and happy with all the support that has come to me from members in the Gulch.

jbrenner is helping me explore FIT as an option for college (I am a high school junior currently).
An anonymous benefactor has paid a year-long subscription for me to be a producer.
Many, MANY more examples come to mind, yet I do not want to embarrass anyone by calling them out.

I never expected this bond of a community from people across the continent, in many different ages, in all different occupations and stages of life. But I should have; we all have an underlying ideology, even if we have differences. I have received overwhelming support from everyone here; even if I am too busy to respond to some interesting posts, it makes me smile to see the words "Daily Digest" in my inbox and know that people like me do exist and thrive.

So, thank you, to everyone, merely for existing as you are. I appreciate it.

Your self-interest and my self-interest are co-aligned sufficiently, Sarah. It is my pleasure to assist you. You are worth my time, and I presume everyone else here thinks the same way about you (Notice that I didn't use the word "feel".).

Don't go to FIT! You'll end up like Brenner and me!

if she might end up a curmudgeon, it's gonna take
at least 60 years and a whole lotta hard knocks! . I'd
rather encourage her to be the heroine in this life!! -- j

I can be a little curmudgeon-y, but perhaps with your encouragement I will be a heroine!

In my limited exposure in working with highly productive people, heroes as it were, it is not very glamorous. They bust their butts, take criticism for being too intense and for pushing the boundaries, they fail, they look foolish, they repeat that cycle over and over. Eventually they get lucky in this process, and people say it was "just luck", right place at the right time, overlooking all the hard work that came before. They have to avoid and ignore those people because the more you do stuff and move things around in the world, the more people who admire or condemn you.

I only know this from watching, since I have not achieved heroic success yet. If my observations are correct, though, you have a bumpy road ahead, but it's much much better than settling for mediocrity.

That's very true; I've already experienced the "it's just how she is" phenomenon when other students explain why I'm top of the class. They ignore the fact that I do bust my butt to get where I am now. I intend to revolutionize molecular biology by continuing the butt-busting, but I wish the struggle would be easier.

Will you marry me? Seriously though, I'm overjoyed to find a young woman with a measure of wisdom. You're so much wiser than I was at your tender age.

As an active senior citizen, it make the world seem brighter that there are students like you, who get what reason and capitalism are about. When our daughter was ready for college, we looked long and hard for a university which would honor those ideals and not try to brainwash her into the liberal ideas. She came through it with her belief in Rand secure, and on occasion hands out pens to clients with "Who is John Galt" inscribed. Hold srtong to your beliefs, forget all the peer pressure schools tend to push. We are cheering you on.

If there is a college out there that exists like that, tell me, because I'm sick of altruistic ethics in my school. Student Government at my school, although I would have joined otherwise, is full of the socialists and communists... It would be refreshing to find a place to survive.
