    I just stumbled onto this and I am in the middle of reading The Art of Power about Thomas Jefferson. I'll get it out and add a quote or two I've highlighted on my Kindle.

    the Sedition acts were to discourage insurrection by those loyal to a foreign power. In that way I think they did work. Certainly doing nothing would have allowed the cancer to grow until insurrection would have occurred.

    We could use an Alien and sedition act these days...unfortunately we'd have to start in out government. It was repealed but again instituted in 1918 and believe again in 1954.

    Agreed. I've been in a book club for several years and for the last 6 months or so I've managed to bring up the importance of individual rights during every book discussion. We mostly read fluff books so it's not always an easy feat. Our next book is Fancy Pants by Tina Faye (blaht) so I have a challenge coming. But yes, always speaking up, pointing out errors in our gov etc is up to those of us that will be vocal whenever possible.
