Why don't parents instill self responsibility like they used to? If you go to college and rack up debt...it's YOUR debt, not your parents. Your parents do not owe you a college education (contrary to popular peer pressures), nor do they owe you a roof over your head when you're an able adult. This topic blows my mind. I had a discussion once with a 'friend' at work and she was basically saying the reason why they were buying a bigger house was so they're sons could move back in after college. I was stunned and showed it and asked, "why would they be moving back in", she said, "because they sure won't be able to find a job the way things are right now". My eyes glazed over with confusion and I said, "Then why are they racking up college debt, RIGHT NOW?" Some people are void of reason. My Dad always told us, "Once you move out, you don't come back." This country has lost it's marbles.

I left at 18. My dad said, "You'll flunk out and be home by Christmas." I never went back.

  My parents wouldn't even let me apply at an in state college. They wanted me on my own far, far away...and they were right! I never went back home, except to visit.

    Were your parents devotees of AR as well? I am thrilled that my daughter is going to the private university I teach at, not only because it will cost both of us less but because she chose it ON HER OWN. My other daughter, well, I expect her to go to a state school. Ack!

      They didn't read AR until I recommended it to them, but they both grew up the hard way--poor in the Depression--and they insisted we do things on our own. AR would have loved my parents' philosophy.
