All the states participate in an NAEP test on basic skill: reading math. Since it's a national test, the state governments have a chance to see how they're doing. The next test will be correlated to Common Core.
You can argue about it until you fall over
blue in the face Hollering at your teachers won't make a difference either.

    When you see boring or bizarre questions on a middle school worksheet, though, you have to wonder if it's a plot to destroy America.

    The problem doesn't seem to be with the Common Core standards themselves, but rather with the curriculum associated with those standards.
