Wine and beer are easy hallmarks of civilization. At first, the root words were not differentiated. The Hungarian word for wine is "bort" (cognate for beer), while the word for beer is "Sör which has "brown" for its root word. Beer is brown wine. It is significant that the traditional Passover bread is unleavened, not raised by yeast, but antedating zymurgy. It is famous and widely known that Louis Pasteur achieved fame and respect for his work on behalf of the French wineries. If not for wine (and beer, and bread) we would might have no antibiotics.
