The president originally was the commander in chief of the military. Obama is not that at all- he is a political hack and Russia knows it and gives him no respect. They wont do this to Trump Buzzing our ships buys the Russians nothing except showing disrespect. Russia actually needs the respect of the world now that its economy is coming apart.

"You don’t get to kill people just because they’re being annoying," said Hoffman, who commanded frigate DeWert and cruiser Hue City. Cruisers are the fleet's foremost air defense platform and are tasked with guarding flattops from incoming threats. -- http://www.navytimes.com/story/milita...

The Russians actually do this regularly. Other countries casually refer to it as part of the “standard harassment package” that Russia engages in.

The Russian agenda is to point out that they can disrupt and disturb US naval activities. Russia was sending the United States a clear reminder that they are sailing in waters very far away from their own reinforcements.

The USS Donald Cook was engaged in an exercise with a Polish helicopter. It was pretty much as if a Russian destroyer was working with a Venezuelan or Cuban component, and we buzzed them.

I am still pissed off about the assault on the USS Liberty.
"[CDR William L.] McGonagle received the Medal of Honor, the highest U.S. medal, for his actions. The Medal of Honor is generally presented by the President of the United States in the White House, but this time it was awarded at the Washington Navy Yard by the Secretary of the Navy in an unpublicized ceremony, breaking with established tradition." -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Lib...

Like Presidents Nixon and Ford, Lyndon Johnson served in the US Navy during World War II.

President Obama is not my favorite person, but the flak he takes here is not warranted. Pres. Obama has enough character not to fly as a passenger on a fighter, land on an aircraft carrier, and declare a victory that never materialized.

Actually the victory did materialize. Militarily Iraq was completely defeated. As a military operation it was a stunning success. However when they turned it over to the civilian politicians things went to hell. But the people on that aircraft carrier did their jobs well.

Yeah. This is pretty standard with navies. With armies, not so much, because engagement is too easy. At sea, distance -- even a few meters -- is the norm. The Romans were victorious at sea because they turned naval battles into land battles, ramming ships and dropping down boarding planks for their soldiers to cross. As long as you keep your distance you can wave "moose antlers" all you want.

I think the response by the Russians should be expected with our armed missile destroyers near their territory, and next to Ukraine, a country having open hostilities with Russia.

If the Russians had war and/or spy ships off the coast of Cuba during armed aggression between US and Cuba, I would guess the US would not just have unarmed planes buzzing them once.

There is nothing significantly weak about the US military. It is just constantly misused by our executive branch, unrestrained by Congress.

Fortunately our remaining wise officers in the military dislike killing their own soldiers more than our own politicians do, and exhibit some rational restraint when put in these horrific situations.

as a USAF pilot during the cold war, we constantly flew along side the "bears" over the poles...nothing has changed...the politicans were cowards back then as they are today...

I was going to plus that -- then minus it. You know the old USSR like the USA like modern Russia is a civilian government, not a military directorate. The party controls the gun. Politicians are not cowards. Many are veterans. If the militaries could engage in war-games without consequence, then they could be given open orders to shoot to kill each other and every day would be another day in a ongoing "forever war." The problem is that it escalates until civilians are involved. So, the leaders - "politicians" you call them - keep the military under control.

If you want to see a world where the military is not restrained by politicians, look at central Africa. They suffered the worst world war in history. Most Americans never knew: 5.4 million deaths https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_...

the "brinkmanship" demonstrated last week indicates a willingness to return to "cold war" tactics...our response should have been quick and deadly to send a clear message...will not get that with Obama...

I disagree. During the Cold War there were few such minor incidents. Major escalations, saber-rattling by both sides did happen. I believe that the USA sank a USSR submarine off the coast of California.

But these minor annoyances were uncommon because of the danger of rapid and uncontrolled escalation, which is what mia767ca called for.

"You don’t get to kill people just because they’re being annoying," said Hoffman, who commanded frigate DeWert and cruiser Hue City.

The theory of Mutually Assured Destruction kept the peace (more or less).

i served during this time...my first instructor pilot was the first medal of honor winner in vietnam...he convinced us NOT to volunteer for pilot slots to Vietnam...out of my class of 72, 12 went to Vietnam...all 12 were killed...i also had the circumstance to "dead-head" later as a pilot for American Airlines next to Henry Kissinger and engaged him in conversation..he openly stated that our politicians had to prove to the communists that our politicians were as willing to sacrifice americans as the communists were willing to sacrifice their citizens...

these policies had a devastating effect on the morale and willingness to fight by our military men and women...

decisions made near the end of WWII to nuke japan rather than sacrifice 100,000+ american soldiers to take japan inch by inch was the correct decision...

since then, a different brand of politicians rule america...they are a disgrace to those who fought to establish and maintain our freedoms and liberty...

there is a conflict coming in dealing theoterrorism (islam fronting as a religion for a terrorist organization)...i trained military student pilots from the middle east... took them to the officers club and insisted they drink until the keg of beer was empty...i got into their heads and into the roots of islam...our choice will be to join them or be beheaded, our women raped, and our children sold into slavery...it will not come in my lifetime, but it will for my children and grandchildren...

i have made sure they understand what is at stake and what will be necessary to gain final peace...it is not MAD...the terrorists will have no problem walking into this country and detonating suitcase nukes...

Now you are talking about something entirely different. The conversation turned from the Cold War and Russia to jihad today. In some contexts, the toolsets remain the same. In others, the solutions are different because the problem is different.

If you want to discuss jihad, we can do that in a different thread. Do you have any other plan besides killing them all?

The same applies to World War II and the atomic bomb. It is a false dichotomy to claim that we had to either nuke Japan or sacrifice 100,000 American soldiers. We can discuss that elsewhere, also.

Henry Kissinger was no more or less an astute observer of human affairs than anyone else who held the same job. What would Stevens T. Mason or Charles Evans Hughes have recommended?

thomas jefferson....created the marines to combat muslim pirates that were seizing out shipping and killing our sailors...he sent them to tripoli to kill "...every muslim man, woman, and child...". it worked...sued for peace...

it is time to re-send that message...

the nature of evil has many faces, but it is still evil and must dealt with directly...the brinkmanship displayed last week by the russians, in essence, is not different that jihad or cold war...

if you do not deal with it now, you only encourage it to grow like a cancer...

when you are up to elbows in alligators, it is hard to remember that your original purpose was to drain the swamp...

Actually, back during the halcyon days of the Cold War, U.S. and USSR military elements frequently engaged in mutual harassment, much of it kept off the record. My favorite story involved USAF units stationed at Elmendorf AFB in Alaska, who were constantly sparring with their Soviet counterparts.

The game usually involved a "two high, two low" exercise, with a pair of fighters briefly penetrating the radar screens of their opponent at high altitude, with a much more aggressive penetration by two fighters "on the deck". It became a game of oneupmanship, culminating in two Soviet aircraft buzzing the Elmendorf control tower. The USAF unit answered with a maneuver that ended the game, buzzing the Soviet airfield's housing area at supersonic speed. The shock wave broke a lot of dishes, and the Soviet pilots wives ended the game better than any directive from higher ups could have.

I didnt get the cartoon yesterday but a nice film montage of my all time favorite Bond Girl...

I agree with both cartoon and film. Keeping in mind we had a President back then when Bianchi was a young actress.
