What bothers me is when guys like Charles Rangel and Tom Daschle get caught with "mistakes" on their returns. These folks write the code. If they cheat or don't understand it then its time for a major overhaul.

I'm not sure that's a good gage of cheating or not anymore. The tax code is so bloated, convoluted, and contradictory that two accountants can get different outcomes and both be perfectly rational. Heck, even the IRS doesn't stand by their own guidance if you have a question. If even they can't give a competent answer, how possibly can an ordinary citizen?

I have always thought if the left thinks taxes are too low that they are free to send in more. They can stop taking deductions and make as large a donation as they like.

How do you know whether you are cheating or not? You can 't get two accountants to agree on an avg return

At my church when we tithe we are permitted to specify where our dollars are to be used e.g. the general fund, the benevolence fund, etc. Imagine what our federal budget would look like if taxpayers were permitted to earmark their taxed funds permitted uses. I would no longer have to support programs to which I am philosophically opposed. I would imagine we would have some of the best infrastructure and military assets ever seen, and would be looking at massively underfunded entitlement programs.
