What Books or other Media Do You Recommend for Children?

This topic was suggested by jlc in the "Cognition and Measurement" discussion. She replied to my reply to her that Denise Schmandt-Besserat's research on the origins of writing was edited into a children's book by Morrow Jr. in 1999: The History of Counting.

From infancy through late childhood, I read bedtime stories to my daughter. Many of them were her choice and nothing special. However, in the mix were Edith Hamilton's Mythology and Surely, You're Joking Mr. Feynman.

As for other media, we watched the usual PBS morning fare. Included in that was 3-2-1 Contact, a science show. The Muppet Show was an easy favorite. (It could get rough: Kenny Rogers singing "The Gambler" for instance.)

We also played a lot of Moria and Rogue for a couple of years. They were direct out-growths of the text-based Adventure game, and not real-time, so they encouraged thinking and planning, versus reacting.
