just finished reading the short story from #2. I'm very impressed with it--there's a lot of depth there from her at only 21. of course, she'd already experienced a lot of life by then. I love being able to see how her style evolved. you can tell she was on her way to mastering the English language, but her voice was already emerging. are there any stories she originally published in Russian? I wonder if they were translated, if they'd still sound like her or if she developed this style precisely because English wasn't her first language. perhaps at this point in her writing she was still thinking in Russian and mentally translating her sentences into English. who knows? I wish we knew more.
