Cruz: Drafting women is “nuts”

PETERBOROUGH, N.H.—Ted Cruz on Sunday said he opposes requiring women to register for a potential draft, breaking with Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush and Chris Christie, all of whom indicated support for opening up the Selective Service to women during Saturday night's debate.

“I have to admit, as I was sitting there listening to that conversation, my reaction was, ‘Are you guys nuts?’” Cruz said Sunday, speaking at a town hall here. “Listen, we have had enough with political correctness, especially in the military. Political correctness is dangerous. And the idea that we would draft our daughters to forcibly bring them into the military and put them in close combat, I think is wrong, it is immoral, and if I am president, we ain’t doing it.”

To applause, Cruz went on to note that he is a father to two daughters, and he wants them to follow their dreams.

“But the idea that their government would forcibly put them in a foxhole with a 220-pound psychopath trying to kill them doesn’t make any sense at all,” he said.

The previous night, at the presidential debate, Rubio said he had no problem with women in combat, and added, “I do believe Selective Service should be opened up for both men and women in the case a draft is ever instituted."

Bush made a similar argument but stressed that there is no draft and he is not calling for reinstating one.

Comment Bush loses again there is a draft or else how do they have the right to put men in jail and levy huge fines for not registering. The fact that it's not currently in use is a five minute exercise involving two quick congressional votes and one presidential ink pen...or an executive order to produce a different fact.

Christie was less explicit, but more broadly indicated openness to allowing women to register for the Selective Service.

Comment Why not ...or rescind student loan and government job privileges which rest on registration at 18.

Comment Are Women still to be treated as second class citizens and nothing better than playing baby factories to mens cannon fodder role? Or is excluding them from the 'right' to be drafted as cannon fodder and 'relegating' them to the role of baby factories somehow not sexist. Especially since they are arguing combat jobs not the huge need for rear area jobs. Really other than two tits what right to women have to be excluded from the draft rolls or than put the other way what right do they have to student loans and guaranteed access to government jobs? Shall we give them all ten point? status as well for nothing more while we're being pure straight up sexist?

OR are they really second class citizens....

Cartoon too!

Any form of draft on national service is completely immoral. There is no sense quibbling on whether it is equally applied or sexist and other irrelevant BS.

Fine and what do you intend to do about it since lie it or not 'it's the law.' I'm betting it will stay in force ...and women if they get needful enough will be added with no real opposition. Based on the lack of action other than that produced by 15 seconds of you tube fame and network TV fame.

Women are not mentioned in the constitution Men are but only to the extend of defining age for military service. Women are not banned from being drafted but they get the same student loans and the same government job eligibility as do men who must sign up for conscription or pay heavy fines and possible jail time.

    Bush/s comment is B.S

So the question for Mr. Cruz is....women continue their second class status and if so where does the powers granted rule come in.

Women get a huge huge amount of freebies on a sexist basis or not.

going back to the original context of the times women continue as mere baby factories while men continue as cannon fodder

Nothing says they have to be in the combat arms. Army is 7 to 1 rear area versus front line. Ithe woman in a foxhole garbage is exactly that. garbage a non argument without basis in fact. the efforts they would have to go through if they do want in the fox hole with the 120-150 pound load is almost a guarantee and for the rest.....more power to them...Equality without Discrimination!
