Melissa Harris-Perry marginalizes hard work

According to Melissa Harris-Perry, an MSNBC host, we have to be "super careful" about the term "hard worker." Apparently we have a new term to add to the growing list of trigger warnings. What could be wrong with the term "hard worker," you might ask? It seems it could be deemed racist or demeaning to underprivileged members of society. You can see this rant here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKdtA...

There is so much that is disgusting about this rant that it is hard to know where to begin. It could be taken merely as an attempt to undercut the interviewee's (Alfonso Aguilar) praise of Paul Ryan, but it could cut deeper whether done intentionally or not. Is she trying to control others' thinking by controlling language?

Perhaps she is trying to undermine the value of hard work, itself. How are Objectivists - who hold the virtue of productiveness in high esteem - to view that?

How could one counter a comment like that if you came across it in a conversation with a liberal?

I have never thought of myself as clever. I don't usually think up cute things and I'm not necessarily original. I probably couldn't stand the details of building my own home--but it would be fun to remodel an existing home. I probably won't write a book but might be a decent editor.
So, knowing I'm not claiming credit for anything original--just an appreciation of the creative hard work (oops not supposed to say hard work unless one is ONLY working in a field somewhere.) of folks smarter than me I had a hilarious and clever-for me-thought the other day. I was re-reading just the page in AS when Franconia says what would you tell Atlas to do. You would tell him to shrug....
I thought that after the last 7 years what might happen instead of Atlas Shrugged, it may be Atlas Puked. Sorry for the insensitivity.
However, I did set alone and laugh out loud. It struck me as so funny and sadly appropriate I spent a couple bucks with Go Daddy and bought the domain name......
    atlaspuked.com
I don't know what I'm going to do with it--I just wanted it even if the joke is just mine.
Well, now every time I think of Melissa, Al Sharpton, Al Gore, Dick Durbin, Bernie Sanders,
Hillary, all the RINO'S, that NUMBSKULL from the IRS, Lois Lerner, Debbie Wasserman-Whatever, somebody stop me......
I propose the weekly, most insane, ridiculous, freedom hating, intelligence testing buffoon receives our...... wait for it.......
    Atlas Puked Award.
    Respectfully proposed to us--the Gulch.

      Greetings Dennis55,
I think it is a brilliant idea. It could be the next Darwin awards! Here is Perry demonstrating a potential prize.

OA-thank you. I'm asking my wife-who IS the clever one-to do a sketch for me. It would have a muscular male on his knees with his head in a toilet-you know what he's doing. The world he just dropped would be in the corner, a copy of the NY Times laying on the floor where he dropped it after becoming violently ill. I guess there could be a small TV on the shelf tuned to MSNBC. I'm probably spending way too much time and over thinking this-I work about 55 hours a week-and still love it. I should get back to producing but last week MH-P just pushed me over the top. Incredible. Then the Yale students with the First Amendment survey. I hope that was embellished. But as long as I'm in.....BHO gets my Atlas Puked (AP) award as emeritus or at large. But MH-P wins last week. Now-it's only Monday-I can't wait to see the contestants for this week........

Thank you. I'm going to say-Aw Shucks-it's a target rich environment...... It would be better to find the best and brightest person of the week but the crazies just make it more fun..... as I said about not caring who gets the credit.... this is one of the things our GG should be great at. Bring 'em on, maybe we will start to get through to some of the ones that are still "savable"

Herb, thanks for the reply. I appreciate the advice. I don't spend too much time disparaging myself but wanted it clear that I don't mess with an iconic title like AS without a lot of thought. Original or adapted.
My last favorite President RWR said you can get a lot done around here if you don't care who gets the credit.
As long as I'm thinking about it-no matter where the best idea comes from-I would like to see a vomit, puked, or plain stupid award. I believe we are approaching the tipping point in our country. I believe since the Great Society up to Yale students not knowing what the First Amendment is..... stupid is winning. I think it makes perfect sense for like minded Gulcher's to at least recognize publicly and in a amusing way--the award winner. Frankly I want to see TAS or GG taking some face time and recognition going into not only the election but to start conditioning the potential audience for AS the Mini Series. Spend the next year pointing out this ridiculous illiterate garbage and by the way stay tuned for our TV series..... Maybe wishful thinking

The race for president is becoming more of a farce every day. The fact that Trump has a substantial lead and that Hilary has never been challenged on her illegal activities makes one wonder if this is not a Neil Simon play. Whether your symbolism will matter or not seems sadly deficient in that the mere existence of what is happening overshadows it. It might be better to having Atlas not just shrug, but break both arms and let the world tumble off into space.

You just nailed it. The race for arguably the most powerful person on the planet is an absolute farce. A circus - a freak show. Do we deserve better? Do we get what we ask for? Are the crazies just a majority of minorities? Given my philosophy I am generally forced to vote Republican. I am sick of our choices. I am a pro business fiscal conservative. But I am probably a live and let live social liberal. I wrote an unsolicited article for my group of friends and I titled it-I Want the Democrats Out of My Wallet-and The Republicans Out of My Bedroom. Some of them got it. I am not a bible person. Some of my religious friends find solace in this mess-they believe "the universe is unfolding as it should.".
I sincerely find solace in AS. This mess is unfolding as predicted. We will see the producers just shrug. We are already so close. Almost everyone I know feels they are taxed -and regulated to the breaking point--and every taxing body and regulator just wants more. It is unfolding as predicted. I really don't believe we can stop it--we can only be ready when the moochers and looters give up. And it won't be pretty.

You seem to be (pardon the expression) a Libertarian. "It's nothing to be ashamed of, but it's nothing to be proud of either." (From "Fiddler On The Roof.") Actually the views you express are held by most of us in the Gulch.

That is hilarious. I've never heard that before. I suppose I'm Objectivist philosophically and Libertarian politically.
I live in Illinois and I don't know how much of this mess is followed outside of IL. We have a textbook situation of AS. The producers cannot get out of here fast enough and the looters and moochers are going nuts trying to figure out who to devour next.

I'm originally from Detroit. Wanna talk about moochers & looters? The first Black mayor of Detroit said of the business people and Conservatives (Paraphrasing) "If they didn't like it, they could hit 8 Mile Road (city limit)." Guess what? They did. From that point on, the city deteriorated until it became an example of how not to run a city.

"hard work" is a trigger warning for "productive" and a
virtue for all those who deserve it! . whether it's a mom
changing a diaper or a dad designing a building, a son
mowing a lawn or a daughter digging a ditch, they are
all productive and deserving of praise. . if it drags up
memories of slaves, it should be thoughts of praise
for people who were productive and valuable! -- j

Suzanne43: thanks for the suggestions. I like the rolling of eyes and walking away parts. Name calling, however, is like an ad hominem quip - they seldom win arguments or wins over others. It's often satisfying, but if one doesn't wish to engage with a reasoned rebuttal, just registering your disagreement then disengaging would seem to work better.

Handyman, I do agree with you about name calling. It seldom wins arguments as you say. However, when people like Melissa Harris-Perry make such idiotic statements, it does feel good to call them something. "Twit" is pretty inoffensive not like more colorful language that could be used. "Twit" is kind of a verbal rolling of the eyeballs.

I have pictures of things that inspire me on my wall. If I were to have a cotton picker on my wall, it would be to remind me of where I came from; it would give me a sense of pride. I would not sit there, swimming in my juices, thinking about something that hasn't been around for 150 years.

Which answers my question What IS an MP and why should I care. Sometimes taking a brief look is worth while like this Professor Allen at ...Princeton...was it? Who decided the Declaration of Independence had been forged which gave her and her group the right to change the meanings of the Constitution. Turned out she's illiterate and didn't recognize punctuation. Didn't stop her though. Interviews, a book, the whole gamut. What is literacy to a PC major?

Yassir! To MH-P hard work is to be compared to dem ol' cotton fields back home, where you jump down, turn around and load a bale o' cotton. What a steaming pile of horse-pucky.
Hey, Melissa, voluntary hard work is not slavery. Once more, I delve into the morass of one reason why socialism doesn't work (abbreviated).
On an assembly line: Worker A assembles 20 widgets per hour. Worker B assembles 10 widgets per hour. They both get paid the same. Worker A realizes that his work goes unnoticed and his pay remains the same as Worker B. Worker A then coasts along at 10 widgets per hour. Now you understand why every Soviet 5 year plan failed. MH-P's demeanor and anxiousness to make her point shows how desperately she needs to disparage the very foundation of individual freedom.

That's and old saying meant to be humor macabre and the same as saying Seasoned Gratings or in a literate fashion for a change Decimate. To execute one of every ten to encourage the others. Of course the French took that seriously nasty barbaric race that they are. Decimate does not mean total destruction or anything close only ten percent except to illiterates in French and English. Moving backwards old sailing ships had deck gratings to allow air into the lower spaces. Leaned up against the rails they provided a handy place to tie up offenders for punishment floggings with the cat o nine tails. The blood ran freely and the gratings were seasoned. The first is in that same genre.

Sad, and amusing. When I was in high school, I worked in the fruit orchards in the Santa Clara valley, and the migrant workers there were among the hardest working people I've ever seen. This airhead bimbo isn't speaking for minorities who've labored all their lives, but for herself, as a privileged, lazy member of the race-hustler crowd.

MA: I appreciate your comments and understand the impulse to want to dismiss MH-P and those like her. I often do also. Sometimes, though, an inane comment like she made just hooks you the wrong way and you want to vent (or maybe puke like Dennis55 suggested). Sorry if some of my puke spattered onto your monitor!

Using this rant by MH-P as an example, there is a danger in dismissing people who make destructive comments like this. The danger occurs in face-to-face encounters, not in second-hand ones like this. There is nothing we will say here that will ever get back to MH-P, but thinking about this incident serves an instructive purpose for me by providing an incentive to think about ways to respond to such asinine comments if I encounter them face-to-face. That’s why I asked the question about how you Gulchers might respond. I think the worst thing would be to not respond at all. The second worst thing would be to respond with snide or derogatory comments.

The most important thing is to register some kind of disagreement. In many face-to-face encounters, there are often other participants or just listeners. You might not say anything that will change the mind of the perpetrator, but you might of another listener. I ‘m thinking here of the many social situations one finds one’s self in on almost daily a basis. Except for committed hermits, I’m sure these situations arise often. I think of these “situations” as opportunities to let it be knows that the perpetrator’s view isn’t the only one and isn’t valid. They are opportunities to influence others and get them thinking about reasonable alternatives to the tripe that often comes out the mouths of progressives. Teachable moments, one might say.

Dismissing or ignoring destructive comments like MH-P’s carries some dangers – both substantive and tactical. (Again, this applies mostly to in-person encounters.) I’ve sort of addressed the substantive issue above – bad ideas need to be countered. Tactically, it is also mistake. A non-response reinforces to the perp and to anyone else aware of the discussion that the perp is winning. Undermining the validity of a destructive idea should be taken at every opportunity. Another tactical point is that you need to understand your enemy. Not just his ideas, but his tactics. Suggesting that one should not think of people like MH-P (like freedomforall) or take the time to look in on what people on msnbc are saying (like wiggys) and just ignore them concedes the entire battlefield to them.

They dislike the phrase "Hard Work" cause the are incapable and put to the test, having been weighed and measured, they'd be found wanting.

It all comes down to them, what they think, what you make them think, because they really believe that their shit doesn't stink.

I can surmise the closest Harris-Perry came to hard work is the pictre on the wall. There is no sense of relativity in what she implies, demeaning underprivileged or those who won't work, and those who do really didn't do it on their own. I would consider what she does as non-work, the there was the mention of Republicans, the presumption is that Democrats work. She should be 'super careful' about insulting people who ahve jobs.

I would posit that M H-P is NOT a hard worker. In fact M H-P is intellectually lazy! To modify a quote from Reardon, "Try to pour a ton of steel without rigid principles AND HARD WORK." So no M H-P, all work is not equal. Some work requires greater effort and sacrifice. And the results are commensurate with the degree of difficulty in the achievement. What is easy is to dismiss such effort. What is lazy is to try to marginalize the results with vacuous pronouncements.
AND, I would gladly say this to her face. Because, as opposed to our increasingly useless colleges and newsrooms, there are no safe spaces in the real world. Trigger words and micro aggressions only have power over those who give them power. I do not. If I offend M H-P with such speech, then indeed, that was my intention. And my right.

you get a point this time. One might ask MHP how there can be hunger, usally shortened to starving children, in a country with food banks on every corner and still ships millions of tons of food overseas Somebodies lying. There is either no starvation or the food banks aren't being supplied, or the food is being stolen and shipped overseas - where it is routinely sold.

Somebody has to invent things, somebody has to make things, somebody has to deliver and sell things. Where do these liberals think all this stuff comes from? There are people that actually work and provide a useful and desirable product or service for the consumption of everyone including the people that hate the system and only want to consume.

Her justification is that some people vilify some hard workers as "failures sucking off the system." My answer to that is we should be "super careful" about saying those things and not let people who say it prevent us from using a basic phrase like hard work.
