Musings on Socialism

I have been thinking about something the past couple years. I mentioned here how I was so moved by the book, "The Stones Cry Out", about Cambodia. That was a great reminder of how ugly Socialism can be (and why the popularity of Sanders makes me want to jump off a cliff). But, in the back of my mind has been the question of why/how Socialism has worked in Sweden. I have a good, long-time, friend who lives there and, frankly, Sweden has been very good to him. Granted, he's not trying to become a millionaire. But, his quality of life is pretty damned good. Over the years of conversations I've had with him on this (he's from here, originally, by the way) something clicked the other day. One thing Sweden has that we don't have is a political system with many more than two political parties. It has many active parties in its system. If 30% of the voters are pissed, guess what? 30% of the leadership changes. This seems, in my opinion, to allow for a more fluid, adjustable system.

Here, we have two parties that do the same thing - take it or leave it.

Anyway - there's my "Jack Handy Deep Thought" of the day.

Tomorrow's Friday. Looks like we're gonna make it...

Hey Abaco, the Nordic model that Sanders is so feverish about implementing in the US only works when people are working, that is, producing value. The government provides various services for Swedes which the US does not provide for its citizens. However, this is dependent on the Swedes making things of value. Immigration may eventually deter them from expanding services.

Regarding the winner takes all versus percentage (parliament) systems, it is true that this affects the outcome of the legislative makeup of our House and Senate, at a minimum. I suppose the regional representation was designed for varying locales to get fair representation throughout a large country of autonomous states. That said, perhaps state-by-state parliament systems could function well enough.

The trade-off in making a percentage-based representation system is Objectivists get elected (along with Communists, though), and the regional representation might suffer somewhat. Thoughts?

Thanks. Yes, they are really getting dinged by immigration. My friend once dated a beautiful Persian girl there who's brother murdered a Swedish girl, and gone to prison for it. They are seeing a real clash of cultures there now.
