    I say again: Gas Laws!

As long as we operate in an ecology where there are jobs or fee support going unfilled in the US when there are starving people in Mexico, no fence nor law will keep them out. The solution is to (a) end all welfare support for illegals, (b) deport them and their baby families immediately, (c) allow any worker with a Visa to come to the US an make money and send it home/go home.

Once we have shut off the welfare and have robots picking strawberries for less than casual labor costs the immigration will cease. We will not need a fence.

This problem needs a solution, not killing, not liberal ideology.

I don't see why we need a fence when the border could be effectively patrolled by drones at a much lower cost and be implemented immediately.

As for why a fence in the south and not in the north? There is not much of an invasion coming from the north. All IMHO of course.

I think that after what has happened in Paris, much of the liberal claptrap is going to fade. Not fade away, but weaken. The Canadian fence is a waste so long as a Mexican Fence does not exist. A double wire-top well patrolled fence with the border guards empowered with being able to kill if resisted will change the situation radically. We must wake up. We are on the verge of WW3 and it will be like no war ever fought in the past. I'm not sure if we can even wait until the next election.

I doubt that fences on either side are the answers! Enforcement of the laws and close scrutiny of those allowed to visit here seems a much better plan along with our military patrolling our borders and doing the job of our federal government, Protecting our borders! Given a choice I am sure our soldiers would much rather be in the deserts of TX and NM and AZ than in Iraq, Afghanistan or any other Middle East country.

Because that's the source of the illegals.
    Duh!

So if we build one to the south, do you think they will stop trying to get in? And I guess I also have to ask if we are sure that is the only place illegals are getting in?

If your house is in Alaska, and you have a choice between closing the door and locking it, or adding insulation to the attic, which do you rationally do first to stop the invasion of cold air?
It's obvious that you start with the bigger threat to invasion and destruction of your culture, ed.
Will "they" stop? If the immigration laws are ENFORCED, a majority will stop because it will be obvious that Americans have finally decided to resist the invasion and use force to defend the border.
It also increases the economic cost for those who will still try to enter illegally, and that will stop many of them.
The majority do not have the means to enter via boat or air, and those will always be a much smaller threat IF immigration laws are enforced. However, since immigration laws are not enforced, there are a mass of people who overstay their visas, and become illegals. Enforcement is Critical. People overstay BECAUSE they CHOOSE to VIOLATE the LAW. They choose to do this because there are almost no consequences, thanks to the racist in chief (who deserves to be EXECUTED as a traitor.)
The threat from the south is also a threat to the northern European culture of the US. Canada is not.

I live in China. Anyone seen the fence between mainland China and Hong Kong? Nasty looking thing. Double-fenced with no-man's land in between. Lots and lots of guard towers. Maybe 15 meters high. I would have no idea how to cross it yet many people do. Not to get into China of course but to get to Hong Kong. A border across the entire US border to Mexico is laughable and nobody believes this is possible. Well, maybe Trump supporters but we have to wonder about their mental state anyway. Trump knows full well this is fantasy but it plays good for the media, which is all he wants. He can sell more books and charge more for speaking engagements.

If we seal the south...the real harmful barbarians Will start coming in from the north. Haven't heard any statistics about northern border crossings. Anyone have any idea of the level of development along our northern borders?

Ultimately it's pretty simple. Either you build a fence to keep Illegal Aliens out, or you send out men with guns and you shoot every single illegal that crosses the line in the sand. And that's not hyperbole either. I literally mean that you shoot them dead.

If you don't have the courage to shoot at an invading army, then the next best thing is to make some sort of obstacle that prevents unwanted entry.

Why come to the US from the north where its cold and icy when they can come from the south where its warm. Coming from the oceans is harder and more easily detected.

We've already had one terrorist intercepted crossing the border with Canada, who was intending to bomb LAX, and the Times Square bomber came from Canada. Navigable roads are harder to find on the Northern border, but given a few more incursions by terrorists, and expect to hear a call for more security there as well.

At least one of the 9-11 terrorists came through Canada. There have been more stopped at Canadian border crossings since then that are not widely reported.

Another was going after the Space Needle. Stopped at the ferry crossing Port Angeles WA.Dumb ass was carrying his own bomb parts. Too stupid to just acquire them locally after arriving in Seattle.
