The other day I forgot an old HP 8 GB thumb drive in my pants pocket and it went through the washer. This drive has a lot of tech utilities, some of which can no longer be found, that I use to fix issues on client systems.

I put the thumb drive in a sandwich bag with a 1/4 cup of rice and let it sit overnight. Works fine!

Do not
Plug the drive in immediately after it comes out of wherever it was wet. If you do this the likelihood if it frying is pretty good.

    Thanks.
    Here is some in return.
Never, repeat never, leave vitamin pills in the pocket of clothes being washed.
Doing so would make a very nasty practical joke though.

Another one that saved clients a lot of money and made me into a hero more than a few times.

A dead hard drive. The computer runs fine but is not recognizing the hard drive.

Pop out the hard drive, put in in a zip lock bag and place it your freezer. Make sure you have a good seal because you don't need moisture getting into the drive. After 6 or more hours take the drive out and put it into a neutral computer as a secondary drive. While it doesn't work 100% of the time, more times than not you can recover your data (transfer it to the hard drive on the neutral machine) before the hard drive fails again.
