Top Point Earners-What is the point?

Sorry for the dumb question, but what is "Top Point Earners" tally? Is this to show who is the chattiest? Replying "yes" or "no" to a post earns you a point? With the points you get prizes? The Gulch has been open how many years? What has changed? Even old AOL had real time chatrooms. I think it was back in the 1980's we had BBS to post messages. Is this the way objectivists avoid joining together and making changes? I would like to stop putting message on the bulletin boards, and start using 1990's technology. Maybe I am asking too much.

Hey, why are you advocating taking away points? I spend all my day perusing here looking to add inane comments just so that I can gather points. If I did not have the satisfaction of gaining points on an hourly basis, I might just have to end my ability to gather these points.

Seriously, this came from a poster who posted a welcome to everyone who made an introduction that was little more than a copy/paste message (and a subsequent reminder of some other inanity relating to the end of filming). Either he is so enamored with his own importance that he needed to make a personal welcome to each and every member, or he was looking to garner these points.
Now that he has been penalized for such activity, he questions the awarding of the points.
Geez. Could anyone be more transparent?

My copy and paste message was not for points or to annoy you, it was to let people know that they could watch the filming.
If the points are so valuable, where are my prizes. Wasted a lot of time posting all those messages. By the way I never got a welcome message from you! :)

You didn't tell me, what is the value of the points? They go in your point bank account?

They are a common practice in many forums. Most forums call them something like Reputation Points and track them separately from post counts. Here they are called something different, and they are combined with post count. They are common in the world of online forums as a means of representing the reputation of people that post.

For example I own an automotive forum. Our points and user awards are a way for new people to know if they are getting mechanical advice from a seasoned respected member or a hack. It is certainly not a system meant to keep people down.
