The right to buy and sell without government regulations.

My name is Zachary Tarlow and I am 20 years old, a few days ago I tried to sell some silver coins at a pawn shop. I negotiated the terms with the pawnbroker and was all set to make a deal, but when he looked at my ID, he said that I had to be at least 21 years old to sell something to a pawn shop in Suffolk County. I do not see how this makes any sense, in neighboring Nassau County the minimum age is 18, but in Suffolk County, the age is 21. This is government overreach in my opinion. At age 18 I can open a bank account, buy a lottery ticket, and join the military to fight for my country, but I can't pawn something in Suffolk County. This law hurts pawn shops, and does not help anyone. Before you think anything about how selling something to a pawn shop is a bad way to get money, let me just say that I should have the right to engage in a voluntary, free market transaction, without the government setting arbitrary age limits.

The only real issue in selling anything to a pawn shop or anywhere else should be “Do you own the property you are attempting to sell.” Do you have a legal right to sell the items, land, house etc. Once this is established, there should be no bar to the transaction.

Yes, Zach; you and everyone should have the ability to exercise that right and any other that is voluntary between the individuals. I'm afraid though, that as you interact more and more with the society and government around you that you will find more and more of your natural rights as a human and as an American are strictly limited by your governments.

It is heart-warming for this old man to see a young man recognizing the problems. Far too many just go along to get along and don't see. Just hang in there and talk to your friends about your natural rights and freedom.
