Leave the social issues at the door?

On another thread:

Technocracy said, "Leave the social issues at the door." dbhalling and ewv echoed that sentiment. I have always been personally conservative, but ready to let others suffer the consequences of their actions and inactions. However, there is one area for which morality must be insisted upon: TRUTH. If something or someone is fraudulent is lauded, and/or those who state the truth are ridiculed, then I will gladly speak my two cents.

Would the defense of truth be considered a "social issue to be left at the door?" Whether one is an Objectivist or a Christian, I think that all of us in this forum can agree that a society cannot be considered moral unless A = A. I also think that all of us can agree that all the other rot that we have endured over the past generation can ultimately be traced to the fact that the United States (or anywhere else) does not really stand up to say that A = A.

All political issues are social but not all social issues belong in politics and government. The entire field of "rights" is inherently "social". A right is a moral sanction of freedom of action in a social context.

In the context of the religious right, "social issues" usually means their injection of religious matters that do not belong in politics at all, typically imposing religious duties on other people's personal activity. They are destructive both in trying to impose their religion with the force of government and in illogically tying them to American individualism, driving people to embrace the left. Rejecting this does not mean that no "social issues" in the broadest sense belong in politics.

This has nothing to do with demanding honest in politics. But neither does that imply that zealots and cultists claiming "the TRUTH" should be tolerated in government in the name of honesty.

I agree on all that you said here, other than the impact of the religious right. Their impact in the last 30 years has been minimal.

As for your definition of life, perhaps you should consider watching either the following Youtube video, or the original episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation airing right now (8-9 PM on BBC America).

The religious right is well known for militantly pushing creationism in schools, banning abortion, etc., all statist impositions on individuals personal freedom. They haven't gotten away with it anywhere near to the extent they want to yet, but the threat continues and so does the package-dealing tying it to American individualism, creating a false alternative in the battle with the left.

I didn't say anything about the "definition of life" and it doesn't have anything to do with Star Trek.

The definition of life was a big part of the other thread that formed the basis for this thread.

Regarding the religious right, they had their time in the US, but it is long since past.

As for the Star Trek link, had you had watched it, you would have seen that most people's definition of what constitutes life is not as limited as you think it is.
