I'm very happy to have landed in the Gulch...and meet people who are interested in ideas and understanding the truth about human nature as well as the physical universe. I am a retired Army vet with deep interests in literature, history and philosophy. I believe that the strength of an Army rests on that soldier who can stand up and defend the principles of our Constitution and our freedoms without any hesitation. Vets are important to society because many of them have the discipline, vision and drive to create their own businesses and thus benefit the economy.

Welcome, Tim. You sound like a very interesting person. Have you read Starship Troopers by Heinlein? In that book the only people who could be full citizens who could vote were vets.

Thank you. Yes, I have read Heinlein's "Starship Troopers" and enjoyed it. I never thought of making military or government service a prerequisite to citizenship until I read this novel. Heinlein has a point about earning one's citizenship--it is a great privilege. Interesting to note also that "green card holders" can gain American citizenship through military service. Still, I think the strength of the American military is based on the fact that it is an all volunteer force. It would be interesting to hear Heinlein's take on this if he were still alive. The motive to serve should be based on free will and a desire to defend our Constitution, freedom and way of life. Just my opinion on a very deep topic.
