Someone could have told me this was straight out of Atlas Shrugged and I would have believed them.

Dismissing, of course, the fact that there was no internet when Ayn Rand wrote the book, had someone told me this "act" was taken straight out of the book, I might have thought that I missed a couple pages.

They will find a way to tax any manner in which some might make a few evil dollars that they can't get their hands on. I was behind some bimbo with a baby in line at the grocery store tonight with her damn WIC checks (or whatever the hell they are). What a 9 course process that is for the cashier to deal with...mean while everybody in line is losing their patience...and saying NOTHING. I felt like I was being robbed just watching her load up her cart with OUR food. Do I sound bitter?

Bitter and should feel exactly that way. What really aggravates me is that there is no shame in it. When you don't earn it, you have no pride in yourself and have been destroyed as a person. Like we owe it to her... LetsShrug, the bimbo should have turned around and thanked you for paying for her and her childs food.

I wanted to say something so bad, but couldn't think of anything super clever. I wanted to say something that sounds nice, but isn't, but confusing enough to gain intrigue.... good grief I'm planning a witted word exchange with a doorknob.....with too much eyeliner...that I probably paid for too! I'm takin' a shower and washin' this day off me!

I know how that bitterness tastes. I was somewhere when this same thing happened and the manager had to come out and sign them or something...while the lady stood there and acted all put out that it was taking longer than she felt it should for the store to dot the I's and cross the T's, so she could walk out with her "free" milk and cereal.

I think it's time to start calling the government "fat government" instead of "big government". Just my opinion.

I get your point, ornery as it is, but it's like this, dk, we can't shrug until we are fully prepared for what that entails...and right now we are not. So not tying a red ribbon around some of my property and handing it over isn't an option (unfortunately). Some people can up and shrug on a dime, they have the means to do so (and good for them)....but most of us don't, so it becomes a game of chess to figure out the best way to accomplish this without causing more demolition than what were trying to escape in the first place. I am NOT okay with thievery, but I'm also NOT okay with my kids starving, or dying because we have no way to get his medicine. I'm not against making difficult choices and making sacrifices, but I do have a line in the sand that I won't cross. Also, don't mix up having a shot gun at the ready for the knock on the door with paying taxes. It's possible to have both. And I will continue to complain about paying taxes all I want to and voice WHY I'm complaining about it to others who don't even realize it IS theft. Ya big meany!

Okay, I know some will probably call it mooching, but if for a bit you have to take food stamps in order to shrug I see no problem with it. Don't think about it as taking something you didn't earn, but getting back monies you have been forced to pay in already.

Same for other payments from the gov't, as long as you take back only what you gave or less is fair. Only when you start drawing out more does mooching & looting become involved. So figure that into your plan to shrug and maybe you can speed it along a bit :)

**Spoiler Alert** I'm going to swear!
Who the fuck said anything about going on food stamp? That was a leap.

A leap I can't take. How can you stand against what these parasites are doing and go do the same thing.... sorry, but not happening here...Stand on your principles, earn what you make, lest you be destroyed by the free lunch !!!! That is exactly what this administration want, a society of dependance..

well LS, maybe a skip but hardly a leap ;) I was merely pointing out that a producer should be able to have no guilt if during a transition to shrugging they took back from the gov't what the gov't had taken from them already. How much have you given over the years to have them waste it? Think of it as you paid the gov't for certain actions you expected, they haven't delivered so now you want your money back.

And Khalling, same thing, its only gov't dole if you take more than you gave to them. It is difficult to impossible to legally keep from the gov't what they think they deserve, but easy to have it returned to deny them the use of it.

I'm not saying you need it, I'm saying why let them have it at all. It should never been seen as something deserve, but why should they deserve your monies also. Take back your money and no more, and if it helps speed along the fall, all the better.

Maybe for you it's would be a skip...to me it would be a leap....a leap I'd never take. I will not become what I despise in others. I've heard your argument before....

LS, I'm sure then that you refuse to cash tax refund checks then and leave all additional monies over amount owed with the gov't? As you pointed out, your money is long gone and this would have to be someone else's money they pay it with and that would be money you hadn't earned.

cashing a tax refund check is getting back part of your own wealth creation.
food stamps are using a gun to force other people to give some of their wealth, even if you pay in.
If, you need it, and it is the system we live in, do it. we cannot constantly disadvantage ourselves, however, advocating for these programs to be used is immoral. On another post, I talked about applying for an NSF grant. We made the decision to do so, since the govt passed Sarbanes Oxley and made it very hard for VCs to raise capital in the US, so most concentrated on raising govt money.

khalling, transition can be hard on someone who is starting to Galt and twice I did say to not feel bad about using it under these circumstances and only to the point you had given monies to the gov't. I will admit one of my lines could have been taken as advocating doing it solely for the purpose of getting your own monies back but that was not my intent. I still disagree though that you can say in some cases money the gov't has taken is still yours while in others it is not. Case in point, I have never taken an earned income credit even when qualified as I did not earn that though the law says I am 'entitled.' I did however take food stamps for 3 months once even though friends offered to tide me over until things picked upped. I was only taking what I had paid for to the gov't already, taking from them would have been taking from their earnings.

One of the major problems with food stamps is they provide almost double what is actually needed, at least in my State. At the very least they should provide buying guidelines and recipes and stop making it so they get to have steak and high dollar foods to use up their monthly allotments. Because they will use them all each month instead of use them just for what they need. Before the '60s, welfare meant rice and beans for the most part, now it means steak and lobster.

good points. guess what? the head of SNAP is from my home town and I babysat his kids. His wife was my jr high teacher. I so enjoyed their company, that it is hard to see how he is complicit in this country's breakdown. sad, really sad.

They have been threatening to do this for years. It will be another divide and conquer approach. The people in mass will not be granted a vote, and your representatives will not make it a part of their platforms for re-election. They will not even give consideration to the constitution or the intent of the commerce clause.

Anything with the word "fairness" in it today is suspect. It almost always means just the opposite. That's exactly the type of double speak Rand used in Atlas. I read the book in 1981 when I was 20. It had a profound affect on my life, and put into words the things I knew were right and true. I still follow those principles today.
