In a nutshell - the federal government wants to mandate that every out-of-state commerce shall have state sales tax applied to it. It is an attempt to cut off an avenue of tax avoidance.

What business is it of the Federal government whether a state collects sales tax or not? Perhaps this is political cover for state legislators who do not want to expose themselves. But it also could be a prelude to a national sales tax.

Speaking of the insidious spread of Internet state sales tax collection, many thought the EU was the font from which Washington drank its policy formulation cool aid. But wait! How's this for weird? I bought an item from an English retailer thru his website. The vendor advised me that the 20% VAT was being debited from the inclusive advertised price, because EU tax policy requires that anything shipped outside the EU is NOT subject to the VAT. Never thought I'd have anything good to say about the 'Unholy Alliance'.
