Road Work Ahead: What’s Next in the Gulch?

Since the release of “Atlas Shrugged: Who is John Galt?”, many of you have asked “what’s happening with Galt’s Gulch? Is Galt’s Gulch going away?”

With over 18,000 registered members, Galt’s Gulch Online is now the world’s largest and most active online Objectivist community. And, we're not going anywhere.

We are however going to be undergoing some renovations here in the Gulch and we want your feedback.

1.) What do you like most about Galt’s Gulch?
2.) What do you like least about Galt’s Gulch?
3.) What new features would you like to see?

It's not the end... it's the beginning.

One issue that occurs on my tablet, but not on my monitor or my phone:

    1) On my phone and monitor, the outline style makes it easy to see what responses occur to which post, and I like that.
    2) On my (Fire HD) tablet, replies are not in outline form; they appear in some random order and the replies are labeled, "in reply to <post>". This makes seeing the post order almost impossible without clicking on a link. Is there a way to do away with this?

Congratulations Scott and the Galts Gulch Online team, "the world's largest and most active online Objectivist community" is a wonderful accomplishment.

My feedback is this. I would like to know if Galt's Gulch Online is turning a profit? 18,000 registered users is impressive, but how many of those are 'producers' and does the revenue cover your expense such as your time and the web developer's salary? I think it is nice that there is a $4 membership available because that may be the level that some people wish to contribute, but Galt's Gulch Online means more to me than that and I would elect to contribute more if it had been an option signing up. So my suggestion is, if Galt's Gulch Online is income-constrained in any way or if the people who are making it happen are volunteering their time or not being compensated, then let's talk about that.

    agreed, I like that too.

I wish there was a way to follow specific conversations and just see the new posts there.

Thansk for creating this forum for us.

    A small enhancement:
Allow the original poster the opportunity to modify the original title, link, and comments. This would help all-thumbs (or rushed) typists without having to delete and reenter the entire topic. It would also allow correction of links that fail. You might have to add a clickable option to "open original text" when changes were made after comments were posted , too.
(This is knit-picking though. I hope there will be lots of better projects for enhancements.)

Agree, there is a difference between a "troll" and a difference in opinion (and I'm certain everyone who says they hate 'trolls' knows this). Moderators have a very difficult job sometimes, and most often the best response is to let the poster hang themselves with their own offensive words.

    1. I like Galt's Gulch the way it is.
    2. Just not everyday, maybe once a week.

I love that the Gulch exists.

Site navigation has never seemed appealing or easy to me, such as finding a specific comment or the process of determining a category to list a new comment under...

How about a feature where we can either flag a comment for the thread's owner or administrator or empower (some?) of us to be able to move posts like the one I'm replying to here... to another category? Like from "road work ahead" to "movie-related questions", etc?

    Thanks!

^ That! on my monitor, the gray lines are very light and hard to track down to what the original post they're referring to. An equally-thin solid black line should be a quick and easy code change.

I do LOVE the way that my email updates on comments take me exactly to the response to one of my posts.

yes, but what if the data for the 'points' for a user were tacked on to their handle next to their name or 'handle' when they post a comment?

the other day a whole thread erupted after a comment by someone with _2_ points to their 'name.'

kind of the same reason I'd like to see the "who is this person" ID at the TOP of a 'letter to the editor' and not way down at the bottom. Transparency? Truth in advertising?

I don't mind the news reporters as long as they are on a thread in an appropriate category and not interrupting more serious dialogue.

Robbi53: I'm pretty sure I've been termed a troll too!
Some topics beg for a longer, and more detailed response. So troll on!

One person's troll is another person's thoughtful/insightful poster.

I think that I've been termed a troll at various times.

Like most: Interaction with other Objectivists and reminders of AR's thoughts on everyday events.
Like least: News reporters without comments or relativity to Objectivism.
New features: An easier way to follow threads within posts.

    Great site, keep it going!!!

    1) Rational discussions.
    2) (intentionally left blank...until I filled it with this.)
    3) A score board (de ja vu) which shows a member's stats ie; List of member names, Date they joined, last logged in, most recent comment/post, highest rated post/comment...

RE: "The blog platform or format, whatever you use is the best I have seen or used."
Thanks so much Soogoo. No 3rd party platform here. It's home baked 100% here in the Gulch.

    1. I like my fellow Gulchers and the interaction with so many reasonable and generally pleasant personalities.

    2. The occasional trolls, but without them, I 'm sure I would miss some of the laughs.

    3. I would like it if you could change the gray vertical line styles so I could follow the conversations easier. If you were to alternate the columns with solid and dashed lines or different colors... just a thought...
P.S. One more thing: Since we have been limited on edit time I have felt the desire for an option to add a P.S. to our original post so that we might make notes of correction or addendum without adding another separate entry.
