What if I'M offended?...

So, I got sucked into the corporate structure to stuff my bank accounts before I retreat to my Gulch never to be seen again. I'm in a very large corporation, working on projects around the globe. Being near the twilight of a long career, somewhat more seasoned, and philosophical I am observing how our culture has changed. There are very few, almost no, engineers my age or older. I'm not all that old, really. But, we have the 20-somethings and a few of us. I love the younger generation. The young ladies are sharp and will run the world, soon. The young men are sharp and kind. In general, however, people have mentally declined, it seems. I've mentioned this here before. I can be in a meeting and state a concrete scientific fact based in reality on why we're going the wrong direction, and most people are too busy with their own conversations with themselves in their own heads to acknowledge it. And, we go off the cliff. Over and over. All the time. As a consequence, most things get done wrong and mistakes are made all the time.

But, on the flip side - in a culture where things are done willy-nilly and half-assed, the emails and messages about "Tranny Storytime Lunch, down the street today. Come support the trans community!" and "If you're white you probably offend people and don't even know it (because you're a stupid racist)" are on point! Very focused and effective, tireless campaign. In general, I'm over it and just ignore the almost daily messages. But, the tranny lunch message that was sent to everybody included a photo that made me physically sick. I don't hate anybody. I wish good things for everybody. But, what about my sensitivities and beliefs? I find a lot of this kind of message very insensitive to the concerns and beliefs of a lot of my fellow citizens. My boss is a devout Muslim and a fantastic guy. He must be upset by this too. I was telling my wife that it feels like, in the global list of priorities, tranny lunch day is higher on the list than technical effectiveness. It's very, very strange... I remain undaunted. I just keep my head down and work very hard to contribute to my society with technical expertise. It's rewarding and I want to do it. Even if much of society would love to see me burned at the stake. Very "new-testament" of me, I know...

When I got elected to my City's Council I was the first lady in it's 100 year history to get elected. I was appointed to chair the Finance Committee. Boy did I have fun. (1) My first action was to buy Liability insurance on every member of the Council and their wives (my spouse), the City Manager and wife, the
City Secretary and husband and the City Attorney and his wife. It wasn't long until a dodo head guy that we removed from a committee (conflict of interest) sued the City for $5 million dollars. I laughed at the meeting and the Mayor was appalled at my audacity. I said 'let him sue, we were within our rights to remove him.' Everyone buzzed about being sued. I interrupted the uproar and asked for quiet. I then calmly informed them of the Liability insurance. They were overwhelmed! Another time a fellow council member and I submitted a new pay plan for the city employees...at the meeting to vote on our plan, the Mayor suddenly introduced his plan. I let his stooges vote Aye and I voted Nay. It then went to discussion. All city employees were at the meeting and I'd shared our plan with them and they all loved it. The item went to discussion. I innocently asked the Mayor, 'Why did you leave the Police Department out of your Plan?' Everyone was horrified and then started laughing. My Plan passed unanimously. Age and cunning will beat youth and enthusiasm any time! n

some people are so empty, they have to invent things to make themselves feel good

pride in being gay (i do not understand what the pride is for), for example

I have pride in my hetero adventures. I just don't have any desire to share any of that. But, it's been pretty good......LOL

Hahaha, I think that's true of most people. We don't find it necessary to go into detail over our sexual preferences, point them out to the world, and try to mime them (with special emphasis on children) as we gather together in a parade.

The whole thing is just sick.

Thanks for the update Abaco. I retired from engineering in the corporate world 15 years ago, and was noticing the beginnings of what you describe even then. I can't imagine trying to work in a corporate environment now. With all the diversity training that goes on, it's hard to imagine any real work getting done!

Same here only 18 years ago. I finally got tired of management coming back from seminars that taught them how to improve quality or other manufacturing statistics. Of course they had very little bearing for the type of items we were building because we only built 10 to 30 units a month of anything, and had hundreds of different items.

One of my favorite stories involves getting a Pick and Place machine for one of our electronic assembly areas.

If the company goes along with all this woke crap by opening its wallet and pays the tab for you to participate, take it for as much as you can. "Snooze" your way through seminars and lectures on company time and soak up as many company covered lunches and outings as you can possibly get away with. The woke company will virtually pay you to produce nothing and think its is sooooooooo virtuous and may even love you for your progressive attitude - making you a very valuable employee. Save as much as you can while you can because a woke company may go broke - the one I worked for did and it wasn't hard to see it coming.

This is just how my engineer husband conducts himself at work too. He has an enormous ability to ignore things he doesn't want to see or hear (while still knowing they are there).

I can't remember how old you are, Abaco, but hubby is 73 in two weeks and not even close to the oldest person at his location. The company made a huge mistake some ten years ago by hiring only "young and fresh engineers." Now they are admitting that it was a mistake and they need people working on these enormously complex systems who "know what they are doing." The only place you are going to find those people....is at the old folks' home :-) and a few of us other oldies still hanging around in the real world.

I'm taking every nickel we can gather up and stuffing it away - just like you mentioned. I have a feeling we're going to need it.
