When We Didn’t Drive Devices (and We Could Quickly Board Airplanes)

Excerpt:
"It has been more than 20 years since the day after which Americans got used to being handled like felonious cattle at airports. Stand here, don’t go there. Off with your shoes. Spread your legs. Those born after that day have no memory of what it was like to just get on a plane – sometimes, at the last minute – and fly to your destination without having to do more than show a boarding pass to the stewardess – as opposed to the “flight attendant” – at the gate.

Well, a day may come when people no longer remember what it was like to drive a car – as opposed to a device."

Part of the reason that I went out and got my own pilot's license. I can fly when and where I want and I bypass all of the silly shit that Gov.com want us to bend a knee to.

I recall a new station opening up in the 60's that had a grand opening sale price of 10 cents/gal. Only for the first weekend though. Lots of cars had full tanks that weekend.

The best was a gas war in Maumee, Ohio. Would you believe 17cents a gallon? My Mustang and I loved it :)

Always have loved flying, but now avoid it because of the TSnAzi. Tooling around the countryside, visiting friends and family hundreds of miles away was sheer Bliss. Now, if I do any traveling, every step has to be planned, from safe places to stop for a rest to what states to avoid because I carry. I still love to drive, always will, but soon I will have to live with the MEMORY of driving--won't be able to go safely or have the funds to do it. I agree, ffa, NIFO.

A mobile populace is harder to control - especially in terms of wages. This is straight out of Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations. It's one of the reasons the notion of a "15-minute city" curdles my blood.

I am in agreement -- the Theater of Security Admin is a jobs program for those that would otherwise be unemployed -- low intellect, given a small slate of compliance orders to follow .. Get in this line, Open your bag, Stand here, Take off your Shoes, etc... The TSA clowns are compliant with their orders and exist only to make the general public comply with arbitrary edicts.
I now drive to most of my destinations in the US. International flights are infrequent.
Indeed -- the TSA mafia are a rabble of sub-grade louts living from the taxes confiscated from me over my years of productive life.

Got marked wrong for my answer to this question in 8th-grade science. "Is there chemical activity in a battery that just sits on the shelf?"

I said, "Yes," but "No" was what the teacher wanted. Well, we ham-radio people know this stuff! It's really obvious. Leave an ordinary carbon-zinc battery sitting on the shelf for ten years. It will be dead, and will have oozed out some crud that's now messing up your shelf. Chemical activity!

Details vary, but all batteries discharge even when not in use. Some messier than others.

Those batteries have a known monthly discharge rate in storage as all batteries do.

In the Birmingham AL area there was a catchy jingle:

    Jack's Hamburgers for 15 cents
    are so good good good,
that you'll come back back back
    to Jack's Jack's Jack's
    for more, more, more.

Allosaur ... you remember that one?

Now, if I could just remember why I went to the kitchen ...

I must be older yet because I remember it at 15 cents (before I could drive) and hamburgers at the same price. ;^)
(Or maybe I'm younger but have a better memory in this case. ;^)

Sorry Gramps. It was 52 Cents when I was buying it, and it went up to almost a dollar.

I remember only being able to put $5 in the tank. LOL. (Before Pay at the pump)

Back road trips are my favorite. I can tolerate interstates where required. I'm retired now, and have plenty of time to get where I'm going. You can find some amazing stuff on the old US hiways. On the interstate, all you see is interstate.

    Flying? No. just No.
Edit: I actually used to enjoy flying, but I always hated the airports. Now they are positively intolerable.

    I couldn't agree more, bobs.
(My best friend, an ex-Marine, worked as a flight attendant for American for many years until he
was taken by cancer at age 42 in June 2004.)
I used to fly frequently at my own expense and it was a pleasure, domestic and international.
Numerous coast to coast visits, numerous visits to relatives in NYC, numerous trips to Australia,
Asia, Central America and the Caribbean, a few times to Europe.
Now although I'd enjoy seeing friends again, I'm just not interested in having ANY contact
whatsoever with jack-booted fascist thugs (that are paid with funds stolen from me) to accost
me and treat me like I am a terrorist.
They are the terrorists, tyrants, and traitors.

My girlfriend spent almost 30 years with Delta as a Stewardess. We can both fly almost free. She no longer really likes flying anymore. I DESPISE it. There are so many reasons for this. One of my problems is "thimble bladder". There many other reasons. And, I suspect most of us here have the same dislikes.

I passed on visiting my daughter for my birthday because of the hassles of flying. Not only the hassles, but nowadays there are so many cancellations. It took me 2 extra days living in hotels to get back home!

Hey neighbor, I grew up in Mt. Clemens.

And burning rubber from 2nd, or 3rd gear was just scary power for a 18yr old, looking back.

of course, my gas gage moved opposite the RPMs at 9 Miles to the gallon...

Totally agree Carl used to drive 70 all the way to the end to visit "family" but going to the beast coast just is not my choice anymore even interstate 25 is filled with road rage drivers any time of day or night....its so bad here they have a department with phone number directly to the CSP to report.
