Is it smart to go Galt into a Shrug Job when 55% of a Rasmussen poll believes that we will be in a 1930s Depression in 2-3 years?

That’s my question Gulchers. I would have to do something totally heinous to get let go from my job. My employer could however completely close if things get bad enough. Should I “shrug out” before the end of the year. (Which is my current plan) Or, hang on and ride the plane down? I will have NO DEBT by years end. And an adequate nest egg. I am early 50s and can keep some cash flow going by freelancing my services. Considering what I think is a coming economic crisis, would you stay or go?

Interesting question. Know that there are one or more here in The Gulch who think the concept of Going Galt is a farce. I don't. I wouldn't base such a decision on the poll. I'd do my own research (I get paid to do such research, luckily) or seek out people you trust and ask them. I can understand people wanting to take a Shrug job for the purpose of ceasing to feed the beast. I cut back to part-time but stayed in engineering because I like the challenge. Being challenged for 4 or so hours a day then going out to play golf or go shooting...very good balance as opposed to working myself to death. We should each seek our own balance and work with that.

We are, IMO, heading into a recession now. I realize this may disrupt my own newfound job...which I find sad. But, this is the result of voting in beady-eyed criminals with dementia. So, I'm somewhat prepared. There's a massive shortage of school bus drivers and that is a likely Shrug roll for me. But...it may get bad enough that we'll be fighting for those jobs. Something else to consider. Being a fry cook in Akston's Diner may be a compacted position. Haha...

I can relate to your current position. Nothing wrong with quietly taking the money until the poop hits the fan if that lines your pockets in the meantime. Do you have kids? That's a pivotal part of it, I think.

From what you have told us, keep your job.

    Points to note:
    - If you are working and you want to stop it is probably easier to stop working than it is to start when not working.
    - If you are not at work, you have more time in which to be tempted to spend money.
but, if you are in work, it is easier to justify non-essential spending.
    - Have you done a budget for the case of no employment income?

Depends on the job. If you LIKE your job and the people you work with, stick with it. If not, (or if you have things you'd rather do, like travel) take the opportunity to bail. Freelance as needed, and hedge your bets as you see fit. Non-perishable food, Precious metals, real estate.
