So, has it come to this? Will we see and learn devastation in our time? Is Pitin such a madman that he would push the button? Would China be one of his targets or would China nuke both the USA and Russia? How close are we to the unthinkable?
I want to mention one more thought. Our own leadership has mentioned that if anything looks hacked in the US they will consider it an act of war from Russia. FWIW, this is a very easy false-flag scenario. Let's see if it happens. It could be the start of the end...

Putin is no idiot, he knows this. Thus one of the reasons he pushed so hard on oil. Because absent oil all they have is nukes. The nukes make them something to at least contend with militarily, and oil gives them the economic leverage - so long as oil is restricted outside of Russia.
Regardless of one's opinions on Trump and/or Biden, it is a fact that Trump's energy moves worked against Putin and Biden's all worked in his favor. The "SW" program and Reagan's military build up was expressly to bankrupt the USSR, though it carried costs to the US that we are still paying (literally and figuratively).
But we could easily play the economic game today again by returning not just to energy independence (especially in terms of oil) but to becoming the primary exporter of oil. The lower we drive the price of oil, the more Russia has to work on other parts of their economy as they can't rely on oil. This, too was known in the 80s, so I'm not saying anything new.
Next we could focus more effort on safe, small, and more affordable nuclear reactors and make them available to European countries at a small profit or even at break-even. This works better for us than the arms-cost race.
It allows us to use those same reactors to improve reliability of our grid as well as flexibility (well, y'all's grids for you non-Texans ;) ), which can free up oil for other uses such as export, but also reduce oil dependence in Europe. As demand for oil slows down or even stops increasing, the increased supply will drive prices down, thus further weakening Russia's economic leverage over the EU and Germany - as well as the other states in the region. A small-to-medium output reactor could provide electric independence to several US states even.
We are very much like Russia in the 1980s. We are bankrupted FINANCIALLY and MORALLY at this point.
Russia/Putin are not are enemy. They are the enemy of the deep state and of China for that matter.
For now Russia+China is better for both of them. Russia has the energy that China needs.
The USA has the land to grow food that China needs. There will be NO NUCLEAR war. We are going for resources. If we get nuked, our wonderful land won't be good for feeding the Chinese. And frankly, once the nukes launch, it will NOT matter.
Here's my suggestion. How about we STOP PROPPING UKRAINE UP. We fix OUR BORDERS and OUR problems back here. We stop expanding NATO. We stop putting missiles closer and closer to Russia.
And we actually test out this theory that Putin is trying to rebuild the former USSR... Which he does not want to do. He knows the satellite states are corrupt and erode is his power.
I have Russian friends on BOTH sides of this. I have Ukrainian friends. There are a LOT of viewpoints, and we are being ONLY TOLD ONE. That's NEVER good!

Bonehead starts the count-down to WWIII. Trump leaves his opponent the chance to see the futility and exorbitance of aggression, and leaves him a face-saving way to back down.
Trump may not be a genius, but he has more sense than Bonehead.
I seriously doubt Putin will do anything. The consequences for him are too great. This is all posturing.
